No quarantine required for Cher, I see.

That could be a silly move; COVID can survive upon plastic objects for up to 72 hours

Someone has obviously weighed up the benefits of this hugely popular story which paints the country as a savior, and the risks. Earlier in the week they said she would travel in a group isolated from the general population but we can see that isn't really happening and the story isn't going to fly without photo ops. Considering the mess that Okhna's wife caused recently returning from the US it seems very unwary.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Saving Kaavan is the main news story on Cambodia in the international press today.

"Happy ending" for this rom-com ?

1 Dec 2020
Now Kaavan is enjoying the high life in Cambodia, indulging in refreshing mud baths and playing with new toys in his enclosure.
When he met Di Poh, another elephant, the two greeted each other by touching the tips of their trunks.

Sharing a photo of the emotional moment, global animal welfare organisation Four Paws tweeted: "First contact in 8 years!

"We can now officially call him the 'former loneliest elephant in the world'! Seeing Kaavan interacting with other elephants is a huge moment for us but more importantly for Kaavan.

"We are extremely moved!"

A staff member called Pedro said: "All three of our ladies seem a bit intimidated by him, he is a big boy."

Pedro added: "We will give them time to get to know each other, and the girls will let us know if or when they want further interaction."

Even with all the hyperbole and hype
and the fact this one elephant is only a drop in the ocean
and the fact that this kinda $$$ could probably save a lot more wild elephants

that ^^^ is still a very powerful photo.

The world needs a bit of exactly this kind of stuff right now.
Despite my previous thoughts, G'donya Cher, take a bow.

Missus reports he has be busy with the ladies since arriving. Local press has been posting pictures of his male hood as he’s been wielding it on the females.

A journalist says here that Kaavan and Cher are grabbing the spotlight away from more important issues in Cambodia. But, why not use that spotlight to push forward topics that are not considered "interesting" by most international media and the general public ? How many more people will read an article concerning "Cher", rather than "deforestation and human rights in Cambodia" ?
Surely the media focus on these trivial matters should be regarded as a useful tool in directing the fickle attention of the international public toward the situation in Cambodia. What say you ?

Who Cares About Kaavan?
A feel-good story about an elephant has distracted attention from the dire state of the environment in Cambodia.
By David Hutt
December 04, 2020

This week, the world has been captivated by the fact that an elephant that lived alone in Pakistan for decades, and somehow earned the epithet of the world’s “loneliest” pachyderm, was shipped off to Cambodia to be greeted by the bygone popstar Cher. Because of this, I have been forcibly informed by international newspapers and celebrities on Twitter that this is a feel-good story; informed by Cambodian government officials that this shows how much they care about nature; and informed by commissioning editors that this is the story that matters most about Cambodia, rather than the ongoing trial of hundreds of political activists, the possible epidemic, rampant deforestation, or the fact that flooding caused by changes to the environment has killed dozens of people this year.

Nor, in fact, that several key environmentalists have been arrested in Cambodia in recent months, including Thun Ratha, Long Kunthea, and Phoung Keorasmey of the environmental group Mother Nature Cambodia. As Phil Robertson, Human Rights Watch deputy Asia director, noted in September, “The Cambodian authorities’ latest wave of arrests of activists shows a highly disturbing disregard not only for freedom of expression and assembly, but for land rights and the environment.”

Best of luck to the elephant Kaavan in his new home; best of luck to Cher for being in the spotlight again; and best of luck to my colleagues who have earned bylines from this. [BUT...]

Oh dear, i think our Mr David Hunt needs a couple of years break.
It did wonders for my burn-out.
Lashing out like that is a classic early sign. (I know)

He raises valid points but it is not a zero sum game.
I am with you, News.
Use this story to highlight the real environmental issues - but not in the grumpy bum way that (the very worthy) Mr Hutt has approached this.

But i never put the boot into a bloke on the edge of Kh environmental burnout. For those of us who care, it is a jungle full of gut wrenching and heartbreaking psychic minefields that we play in every day.
