Eating dog meat in Cambodia
Re: Eating dog meat in Cambodia
Well, 100,000 of them survive, adaptation?SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:22 pm Good hypothesis Andy - street dogs fed on self-caught rats.
BUT - are street dogs adept at catching rats?
Most of them are not small terriers or specialist rat-dog breeds like that.

Then again the big dogs probably eat the small terriersAndyKK wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:30 pmWell, 100,000 of them survive, adaptation?SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:22 pm Good hypothesis Andy - street dogs fed on self-caught rats.

No, maybe not. ??AndyKK wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:33 pmThen again the big dogs probably eat the small terriersAndyKK wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:30 pmWell, 100,000 of them survive, adaptation?SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:22 pm Good hypothesis Andy - street dogs fed on self-caught rats.

terriers being terriers, would have eaten the street dogs. for breakfast.
- then ,probably adopted the local habit of becoming big arrogant and lazy immediately upon becoming the winner
so, hopefully, then in turn to be eaten by the new crop of lowly but extremely fierce little terriers
so perpetuating the age old cycle of dog-eat-dog life all over again.

I was at a drinking sessions in the Philippines a while ago with my dog. The host was preparing an 'appetiser'. It tasted OK, red meat but I wasn't paying attention.
I offered a bone to my dog but he REFUSED!
Thinking back to the preparation, we were eating dog.

Re: Eating dog meat in Cambodia
Someone gave a meat dish to our house because of the Fiesta (philippines). I ate it with rice, and as is my custom, I fed some to my dog as I was eating. She loved it. I only found out later in the day that the dish was dogmeat.
Re: Eating dog meat in Cambodia
I did.
I once went for a 5 day project in Ta Lao village in Ratanakiri, it's a pretty remote village across the Se San river with mostly people of Lao origin.
I stayed at the house of the local school director, and I was brave enough not to bring supplies with me and 'submerge' in local village life. First day it was bony dog, specially prepared for the guest. Denying it was out of the question.
Second time was in Kompong Cham with a Vietnamese friend. A dog leg, charcoal grilled topped with red ants. I know it sounds crazy, but it went in well with a few beers.
I've never seen cats being sold for consumption in Cambodia.

My dogs do a better job at catching rats than my cat. Back in the West I favored cats, it's the opposite now.SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:22 pm Good hypothesis Andy - street dogs fed on self-caught rats.

How are there 100,000 street dogs? I have rarely seen any.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Rabies vaccination volunteers needed for Mission Rabies Cambodian project
My Vet Candy
Mission Rabies, the UK charity at the forefront of rabies elimination worldwide, is seeking volunteers to join their greatest project to date this November. The volunteers will be part of a pioneering project in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where a child dies every week from rabies. The team’s mission will be to vaccinate 100,000 dogs in just ten days to protect the human population from this deadly, but entirely preventable, disease.
