Eating dog meat in Cambodia
Re: Eating dog meat in Cambodia
The term doggy bag takes on a new meaning...
People eating street food around the world consume dog and many other forms of meat..
For decades there were warnings about eating roadside tacos in mexico..
In PP they had a recent story about the drowning vats for the 1 million dogs a year processed for meat.
If you have had long drinking bouts with locals you may have eaten dog..
I shot a rattlesnake in my driveway and my neighbor grilled it...My son described it perfectly...it tastes like meat....
If you braise a dog with aromatics and herbs and treat it like a rabbit or lamb it would come out quite good.
I am still looking for a cat in Siem Reap that has a complete tail...and a lot of dogs seem to be very very nervous and untrustworthy...
It only makes sense that any form of meat is fair game during these trying times...
There are always cultural isssues involved in cuisine.
Veal...foie gras.....are big issues these days.
When I was in Zambia there was nothing people would not eat.
I think I will stick to chicken..pork...beef...fish..
There are armadillos infesting the USA coming North from mexico..texas.oklahoma and into kansas..and many more states..
I saw that guy who went around the world eating weird food eat fried armadillo in Mexico...like it was prairie lobster...
Dogs need a guard human these days...

Quote from BR549 post - In PP they had a recent story about the drowning vats for the 1 million dogs a year processed for meat.
And there is a team coming from overseas (the volunteers also pay to do this) to capture and vaccinate against (Rabies) 100,000 street dog of the city Phnom Penh.
If the above is correct in any way, the sellers can at least say their product is 99% rabies free.

Always "hope" but never "expect".

One million dogs a year... Quite a business. Raising a dog takes about 5 months. Hard to make a profit out of that, even if you feed them rats (that would be how many rats per year to feed a million dogs?).
I call it a hoax.

whatever they do, to go to a full grown one from birth takes 5 months....SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 4:39 pmLOL
The multi-national highly organised dog-napping industry and supply chain to Vietnam does not "raise dogs".
A rat a day, that's 150 rats to feed one.
Then you have 5-6 kg of meat you can sell for what? 4-6 bucks a kg?
Not even talking about the cost of cages etc etc.
Most dogs eaten in Cambodia are either caught (stolen) or killed because they chased chicken / bit the owner etc etc.
Just my experience in Cambodia. I don't believe the '1 million dogs bred in farms fed with rates' story.

Yeah, sorry K, i did not go back and see the "dog farms" report.
I agree - not feasible.
It is my understanding that the huge trade to VN from Thailand and Cambodia relies on a highly organised dog-napping operation. These guys comb the streets every night.
The report below is just one example of the evidence i have seen for that, lots of evidence from Cambodia too - including what every street smart Khmer will tell you. Lock up your dogs a night.

No! I agree with you on the numbers, but if you don't hastily move rubbish you get an increase in vermin (food) and 100,000 dogs running around the city, breeding, at no cost to someone results in many kilo of food, and money in the bank.Kammekor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 4:47 pmwhatever they do, to go to a full grown one from birth takes 5 months....SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 4:39 pmLOL

Yes, stray dogs are on the menu, and so are dogs misbehaving in any way. I agree.

Re: Eating dog meat in Cambodia
Good hypothesis Andy - street dogs fed on self-caught rats.
BUT - are street dogs adept at catching rats?
Most of them are not small terriers or specialist rat-dog breeds like that.
