Re: Drink Spiking in Phnom Penh?
Yes AC had it's share of nasty characters and people getting offed for one reason or other (usually money of course). It still does, but your average guy going through for a few days or a couple of weeks won't encounter much of it unless they are just plain unlucky or stupid. And a lot of this started when said eurotrash mentioned above moved in to fill the gap left by the empty bases. You could get away with a lot before that because the whole place ran on the yanks being around and they ran a (relatively) tight ship. Pinatubo really was the beginning of the end for the place. I've been back a few times over the past few years and the place is just as big a shithole as it was 20 years ago, except bigger and has more malls.
OTOH a mate of mine and I had our rental moto stolen in PP at gunpoint back in 1997. It really was the wild west back then. Worst thing that ever happened to me in AC was my watch being stolen right off my wrist on the street by some skank and I didn't even know it until 20 minutes later! Oh, and the obligatory attempted card game scam.

Well to be fair things got a bit messy in Phnom Penh in 1997:johnny lightning wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 8:21 pm OTOH a mate of mine and I had our rental moto stolen in PP at gunpoint back in 1997. It really was the wild west back then.
I wasn't here at the time but heard it got particularly bad for armed robberies in 1998, but the security situation improved after that. It's never been that bad since, the end of the war helped I guess.

There was something in the news recently about a couple Khmer guys spiking the drinks of some hostesses at a KTV and one of the girls died from it.

That's right, I forgot about that. I wonder what the hell they are using?

I remember that dustup. I was in Cambodia at the time and watched reports of it on CNN! Funny they had better cable TV then than they do now.

Re: Drink Spiking in Phnom Penh?
Thanks, it would be good to know what was being used though. I remember GHB being mentioned as one, Rohypnol is another candidate. Lots of stuff can be used though, a few valiums crushed and hidden in a drink could easily incapacitate many people, especially if they are already drunk. I've never witnessed it myself, but then I don't really go to the kind of places where stuff like this happens. I suspect at least some of these "spikings" are people who have knocked back inordinate numbers of drinks etc and are then surprised when they continue on and then wake up 15 hours later missing some cash/ possessions. There are whole gangs of guys who come in from the suburbs to the bar areas in Phnom Penh just to rob vulnerable punters, some of them even dress up and wear makeup just to fool drunken guys for long enough till they have their wallet. It's a fucking nest of snakes.

I have a feeling that significantly more goes unreported than reported, perhaps down to the embarrassment factor of having been done/duped/roofied. Although not around for years in PP like many of you on here, I've seen enough to know that too many people get themselves so blind drunk that they are so far out of control, they couldn't possibly know which way is up, let alone anything else. The alternative is that some who get pinged for a wallet full of cash have enough in the tank to chalk it down to experience. Who knows? It's sad, because places get a reputation. There are opportunists everywhere in the world. Perhaps just some more than others??John Bingham wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 9:58 pmThanks, it would be good to know what was being used though. To answer Phuket Richard. the company I worked for, United Tourist Promotions, had its headquarters in Angeles because it was founded by 2 long term American expats living there. UTP also had offices Manila, Cebu and Baguio. I would spend about 5 months of the year traveling the country collecting data for the travel guides I wrote or working in Manila. The reason I left was that I only received about half of the royalties owed on book sales, which were about 120, ooo in the 2 years between when the books were released and the time I left the job. They also reneged on a promise to relocate me to Manila, as I had a gutfull of Angeles by that time.
Johny Lightning is 100% correct in saying that the real nastiness of Angeles would not be obvious to casual visitors.
