Doxey's Index of Irritation

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

i dunno... i'm quite well known in sihanoukville amongst the khmers, even random tuk tuk drivers know my name lol i find it a rather small place tbh, but thats why i like it, but yeah knowing some khmer does help you break those barriers, and stop the hasslers.
There are places that I go to regularly and people know me, but there are whole areas in Sihanoukville that I don't go to often, where I feel completely anonymous and it's almost like visiting another town.

I like Sihanoukvillle because it's quite big for Cambodia ; big enough to breathe in, without being a real city. I come from a small town where everyone knows everyone and I left as soon as I could walk.

And LOL that you get recognized Jamie - a khmer-speaking kick-boxer with a Geordie accent - not so many of those among the Kompong Som expat community ;)

No, I'm just a bit quicker than some in seeing things for what they are.

Put it down to cynicism, but without our money, I doubt (city-dwelling Khmers at least) would be so welcoming.

That and the inbuilt aversion to anything remotely resembling conflict, which is completely understandable, given the history.

If someone hates your guts, would you prefer that they smile at you anyway, or punch you in the head/spit at you and scowl ?
I am also conflict adverse, so I'd rather solve problems through negociation than force. (Cambodia is rubbing off on me.)

I would also rather that we all smiled while we sharpen the knives. More convivial IMO

:D Yeah, I also like these videos where a whole pack of them attacks a single man from behind, when they kill each other with knives, swords, meat choppers and crossbows. When they burn down their houses to the ground. When a mob of motodops attacks tourists for not paying $ 5 for that 100 meters around the block. When they serve Khmers first in little stalls even though they are just buying for a thousand Riels and you have a basket full of goods waiting already for 15 minutes to pay. When they spit deliberately in your path, when they call you “ah joy may” just for being on the street.

YES indeed, they really have an inbuilt aversion to conflict. 8) Your turn, again.

A typical aversion to conflict:

He only voted for that because there was no 'orgasmic' option.

where are these areas that you go that you dont go often?
do you live in sihanoukville? (genuine questions btw :) )
yeah i'm actually from a city called Lincoln, which is a small city, places like Phnom Penh are too big for me, thats why i liked Hua Hin in Thailand when i lived there as its a similar size to SHV
haha a lot of people are surprised about how many people i know, but what i find, especially with the cambodians is that my circle of friends expands like a family tree, ill make friends with some people, then ill get introduced to their friends, maybe we will all go out drinking one night, then i may bump into them again on a night another night out/or they would have found me on facebook and go out with them and get introduced to more people and so on, who then soon become good friends, apparently i make friends easy because i apparently dont come across like 'normal barrang', and impressed that i 'understand cambodia' and its people,
haha (btw my accents more yorkshire, my mums from leeds) but yeah i think the tattoos alone make me stand out and easily recognizable,
im just a friendly guy and love meeting new people and making new firends

:) i am originally from Sihanoukville and i don't know him in RL. I do like sihanoukville, but i won't go back to live there. I might be moving there in the future, not sure yet. So far i am in love with Phnom Penh.
