Dover teenager Jasmine Line hopes to raise cash for volunteering trip to Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. A Scottish Girl Guide leader has crowd-funded over $2000 for a trip to Cambodia in July 2018. They say she will donate over 60 hours of her time at Treak Community, Siem Reap. I'm sure the intentions are good, and she has reached her crowd-funding target thanks to people's generosity, but is this an efficient way to really help ? Would it not be more useful to simply send the money ?

Does anyone know anything about the Treak Community Centre ? They have a regular volunteer- voluntourism outfit going with Camps International for example.

In July 2018 one of our Leaders, Alex Groves will be joining a team of seven other Girlguiding Scotland adults to travel to the Asian country of Cambodia.

During her time there she will spend over 60 hours volunteering at the Treak Community Centre, on the outskirts of Siem Reap.

The centre provides support for a community of over 2000 people, the majority of whom are subsistence farmers or fishermen.

50% of the adult population are illiterate, this is a direct result of the Khmer Rouge regime. One of the key functions of the centre is schooling for over 400 children, from nursery upwards. Many of families of these children are not able able to afford state school fees.

A significant part of the education program is the teaching of English. This is again from nursery age. There are also evening classes for adults. Learning a good standard of English will allow students better opportunities for employment in the now growing tourism industry.

The money raised here will go towards the travel, accommodation, equipment and admin costs for Alex during her trip. The team also hope to gather learning resources and equipment that they can take with them to donate to Treak Community Centre.
Thank you

Well they are linked to Concert who used to do a very good job of vetting organizations for responsible volunteering....

However I'd say look at it another way. Sending a young kid with no life experience for 6 weeks to help "poor kids" learn English (taught by a scots girl really LOL) is something I see no sense in/ for sure send them to build those shacks for turtles, or maybe even something tangible and long lasting in a village - a well, some infrastructure/housing. But getting a kid to hang around with kids who will learn nothing from her and possibly form an attachment to her only for her to disappear after 6 weeks is not good.

These NGO's would (if they are genuinely helping people) benefit more from some cash donations to pay for trained/skilled workers who will be committed to the project for much longer than 12 weeks and who will be able to make a sustainable difference.

sending kids from the west for a 6 week resume filler just makes no sense to me. lets hope they have policies in place to ensure she aint filling her facebook of her great work "helping" small, poor brown people with pictures without consent.

We (the social enterprise) have very strong views on poverty tourism / voluntourism and are quite direct when people ask to join us for any period of time.

We also believe that people should be doing "good works" in their own communities long before considering being white saviours in other countries, and that they should fund-raise the same amount of money (again) as their trip will cost, all-inclusive, to be donated into projects they visit (not necessarily ours) while in Cambodia. We're also strongly opposed (as is the Australian government) to orphanage tourism and poverty-porn photography, especially selfies.

We meet some amazing people who meet these guidelines, the rest IMHO are humblebraggers.

Edit - and yep, coming to build/paint houses for others that you have no other relationship with is just an ego trip, and justifying the expense of your travel. Our rule of thumb is that if you're not a builder/electrician/teacher at home, you're not one here either. It's cheaper and does more for the local economy to pay the local guy to do it.

should cut out ALL these "pay to volunteer places" and just pay locals to do the work
There plenty of volunteer projects in the states, but of course you cant say,
"I volunteered in Cambodia with the poor people"

If ur American join the job corps, habitat for humanity or the peace corps, ( the best, lowest paying job you'll ever have). Am sure the UK and Australia have something similar
