I don't think she'll be booking her ticket any time soon; despite the publicity she's raised a grand total of 65 quid. Not quite enough for the in flight meal on Ryanair that.

I'm out of the UK loop somewhat but surely there must be loads of opportunity for youngsters to learn life skills and be of use to their local community by doing voluntary work on their own doorstep. Probably too much like hard work to be of assistance to a dribbling senile 80 year old.
As Jamie says if you feel you have to do it at least put in the hard yards to pay your own passage, but to me this endless flow of well meaning but often inexperienced volunteers just perpetuates the impression or maybe reality of Cambodia as being a victim country forever reliant on foreign charity.

There were when I was a kid. I volunteered at the RSPCA charity shop, an old folks' home and a special needs school while I was waiting to be old enough to get a paying job.

She could blag it by downloading and enlarging a large picture of Angkor Wat and strategically position it in the background and draft in some of the Filipina nurses for a selfie photo op, her friends wouldn't know the difference. Sorted

I think she has what it takes to run her own NGO here. Sit around BKK1 sipping on $4 cappuccinos while asking others to help give her money to stay even longer so she can ask more people for more money to give to the poor for basic things like water, rice, etc.

Hey, she's 14 years old. She means well, but she's just a kid. Blame the adults who should know better.

My first reaction to this thread was "how pathetic" - and how patronizing to think that a 14 yo and friends can "make a real difference" in Cambodia by doing things that Cambodians already know how to do and could do quite easily themselves. But the girl here is still a kid, so cut her some slack :

Jasmine Line, 14, hopes to travel to Cambodia in the summer of 2017 and needs to raise £3,710 for the trip.
She is among seven pupils at Dover Christ Church Academy who will volunteer with Camps International...

If anyone should get stick here, surely it's the people who organize this sort of "save the world at 14 yo and pay top-dollar for the privilege " shit ?

Bumping this thread up with yet another story of a well-meaning volunteer from the UK, raising funds to come and help poor Cambodians.

A Scottish Girl Guide leader has crowd-funded over $2000 for a trip to Cambodia in July 2018. They say she will donate over 60 hours of her time at Treak Community, Siem Reap. I'm sure the intentions are good, and she has reached her crowd-funding target thanks to people's generosity, but is this an efficient way to really help ? Would it not be more useful to simply send the money ?

Does anyone know anything about the Treak Community Centre ? They have a regular volunteer- voluntourism outfit going with Camps International for example.

In July 2018 one of our Leaders, Alex Groves will be joining a team of seven other Girlguiding Scotland adults to travel to the Asian country of Cambodia.

During her time there she will spend over 60 hours volunteering at the Treak Community Centre, on the outskirts of Siem Reap.

The centre provides support for a community of over 2000 people, the majority of whom are subsistence farmers or fishermen.

50% of the adult population are illiterate, this is a direct result of the Khmer Rouge regime. One of the key functions of the centre is schooling for over 400 children, from nursery upwards. Many of families of these children are not able able to afford state school fees.

A significant part of the education program is the teaching of English. This is again from nursery age. There are also evening classes for adults. Learning a good standard of English will allow students better opportunities for employment in the now growing tourism industry.

The money raised here will go towards the travel, accommodation, equipment and admin costs for Alex during her trip. The team also hope to gather learning resources and equipment that they can take with them to donate to Treak Community Centre.
