Dodgy Internet cafes
Dodgy Internet cafes
So, on Saturday, I wanted to go on a Skype call with my family. They called me a bit late though (around half past eleven) so my standard internet cafe was shut down already. This was the beginning of a one hour odyssey through Phnom Penh where I went to ten different internet cafes. 9 of which just flat out said that they didn't have Skype (despite the fact that they advertised it) and one of them had Skype but didn't have any webcams. That just frustrated me, but I could't help but notice that some of those places where crammed full with fully grown Khmer dudes. So, I ask you this: What kind of things might adult Khmer men do in an Internet in the middle of the night? Online gambling? Porn? Deep Web? I wouldn't think that they're just killing time in there & watching YouTube or browse Wikipedia or something like that. Any clues?

Gambling and surprisingly (or not... i like playing them too) games from what I've seen.
Re: Dodgy Internet cafes
This problem is easily solved by aquiring a >$100 smartphone with a camera. Then you can bring your phone to any WiFi place that is open late and talk to your family while sipping on beverages. Mekong River just off Str 118 on Riverside is open 24/7 and has a decent WiFi. Most minimarts can provide signal as well. Get some Mama noodle's as an excuse to be there, they ought to be in the same price range as what you pay the Internet cafes.

Or buy a cheap laptop, install kali Linux or other penetration testing distro on a bootable usb and crack your neighbors' wifi. I'm willing to bet there are quite a few WEP routers in PP that can be cracked in under an hour, but even if there aren't you'll be able to crack most WPA routes in a day to a few days. Once you have the passwords you can switch back to using windows (or other os) for your Skype call.

Keep in mind that not all network cards are compatible. Most cheap ones I've ran across here have been directly incombatible.MekongMouse wrote:Or buy a cheap laptop, install kali Linux or other penetration testing distro on a bootable usb and crack your neighbors' wifi.
Use these two links to ensure compability if you plan to proceed with this idea.

Well, thanks for the hints on getting a Skype call going. However, this wasn't really the intention of this thread. Rather, I was wondering what those guys are doing. Because, I don't know about your respective home-countries, but where I'm from, it isn't normal for early- to mid-thirty year olds to hang out at internet cafes at 12 at night. I know it's none of my goddamn business, but still. Curiosity and what-not.

I think they bet on football matches.

I thought they were open so local girls can chat with their Barang boyfriends.
And I love how how people are still logged into their email, Facebook and everything else when you get on the computer!

Re: Dodgy Internet cafes
This post verges on being retarded. With all the free wifi around why would one waste the time and energy learning to set this up? There is always one out in the crowd though I suppose. I am not even sure if this post is serious. Thank you so much for sharing this information, you are obviously a very tech savvy individual. I am willing to wait a few days until you can crack your next wpa router with your next linux distro and skype me.MekongMouse wrote:Or buy a cheap laptop, install kali Linux or other penetration testing distro on a bootable usb and crack your neighbors' wifi.
