Diamonds are a lie

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

This song/movie has a lot to answer for in terms of perpetuating the myth that you are talking about.

It’s been a great scam and one if the best marketing campaigns in history. The book about Freud’s nephew in New York who created marketing is illuminating.

You don't even need to dig them up, most industrial processes use synthesised diamonds. You can just make them.

Not true. A decent emerald or ruby is worth far more.

Take a walk along the Namibian coast, where electric fences and security guards threaten to shoot trespassers on sight...simply because you can pick up diamonds on the beach within the restricted area. Marketing scam by the usual suspects.

Borderline misogyny and chauvinist mentality...Diamonds are a girl's best friend.

Nothing scammy about it. It’s just clever marketing of a commodity.

Like Coca Cola's bottled water, right?

The courts thought it a scam.

Only reason this hasn't been nailed is because of the money involved.

But hey, whoever heard of money circumventing the law?

You really are a corpus callosum half-empty kind a guy.

I mined rubies sapphires in Thailand and Cambodia and still occasional buy rough and will take a fine one any day over a diamond.
Until recently, only emerald, ruby and sapphire were officially called precious gems. Everything else was called semi-precious. The precious categorization is a reference to value: a really fine ruby, emerald or sapphire can be priced higher per carat than a diamond. Sapphires are extremely hard and durable, so they will last a forever in a piece of jewelry, and rubies and emeralds are extremely rare. There are some rare finds among the so-called semi-precious gems that can be priced higher than the big three, but in general, a fine ruby, sapphire or emerald will hold its value and command more respect and a higher price than other gemstone. That is the reason Art Deco jewelry – heavy on the big three – is usually prized over other period jewelry. Top watch brands, mindful of this, use emerald, ruby and sapphire in their most important jewelry watches, as the big three below demonstrate – from Cartier , Backes & Strauss and Van Cleef & Arpels.

On a carat for carat basis, rubies are worth more than diamonds of similar size and weight. The reason that rubies are more expensive is the fact that it is much rarer for rubies to be found without faults than it is to find a flawless diamond.

Ten Gemstones Rarer than Diamond

Out of all gemstone rings, a Cornflower Blue Ceylon Sapphire is the master of all the gemstones currently. The demand for this amazing gemstone is increasing day by day and the supply is becoming limited. Coloured stones are not mined in large volumes like diamonds and prices are not controlled by anyone except for demand and supply.
