Definition of a business and/or "working"?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

EB Visa $289 agent
Business certificate $25
Work Permit $100
Medical $15

Plus possible tea monies along the way if you don't do it yourself.

Total $429

Now you will be good for one year! Job done.

Having been through the process of registering a business here, you're out by about $1,000 in the first year.

Alternative could be to rent my place out (on a lease instead of Airbnb) and just live in a cheaper rental. Would only make me $200/mo better off but save me a world of pain? Could I avoid the whole business thing that way?

Where does the extra $1000 come in to it?

You're simply not going to get a legitimate certificate of business from the Ministry of Commerce for $25 - if you've been sold one of those, you've been scammed. And that's just step one...

StroppyChops is it possible to be so kind and show me the legitimate certificate of business?

Remind me if I haven't done so within a few days.

Quick edit - if you haven't got a multi-page (50+) MOU document in Khmer and English that is signed and stamped on every page by you and an agent of the MoC, you are simply not registered. You would have hand-signed and thumbprinted about 5 copies of this document. You would have also needed at least one document from the sangkat, for your lease to be registered with the sangkat, and for your landlord to have provided the original tax documents on the property your business is based in. Any of this sound familiar?

Another quick edit - you'd also have had to deposit a sum of money into a local bank account, and the bank would have issued you with a shiny (literally) certificate stating that you had done so.

I had to produce my lease and prove my banking. Before I was issued a certificate, can't remember how many forms I signed. One of the officials came to look if the property and area was suitable. His words where we need to look if the environment is acceptable.
