Five Killed in Siem Reap Nightclub Fire
Five people, including one foreigner of European descent, were killed early Tuesday morning in an apparent electrical fire at a nightclub in Siem Reap City, police confirmed.
The fire started in the ceiling of the Hip Hop Club at about 2:50 a.m. and spread quickly, killing three Cambodian women, a Cambodian man and the foreigner, said Tith Narong, Siem Reap City police chief.
Two Cambodian women were also seriously injured, he said.
Mr. Narong was unable to provide additional details about the five people killed, including the nationality of the foreigner.
He said the Hip Hop Club, popular among young Cambodians, had no windows and only one door, hindering escape.
“The nightclub had no windows and it has only one door, and there were too many electrical wires in the.....

Personally, I just think night clubs are bad setups when it comes to fires.clippy wrote:do you think that this is typical of safety in Cambodian clubs?
They are generally pretty dark. So people can't see very well.
They are loud. Hard to hear a commotion going on a few feet away.
People are often drunk or on drugs when at them.
They are typically more packed with people, inch for inch, than other places. You never have to squeeze your way though a store or typical restaurant. Clubs are sometimes packed like sardines. I've been in situations in clubs, usually on New Year's Eve, that I would have been a guaranteed goner if a fire had broken out.
Most have security/locks to keep people out, and you don't generally use the emergency exits to leave in normal cases. That means you aren't familiar with them and probably less likely to use them until it's too late.
^All the above factors make them a dangerous place to be when a fire breaks out.

its also the smoke and heat in these closed spaces...
ppl dont see anything anymore, the sharp smoke makes your eyes tear, the place is black clouded, difficult to figure out the exit... you cant breath, and panic sets in quickly.
even if you have the direction of the exit, its difficult to get out half blind while stumbling over chairs, other ppl on the floor, who cant get up anymore in the panicking crowd.

If any good can come of this tragedy it should be to get fire safety on the agenda.
Bangkok has had some disastrous fires in the past.

Re: 5 Dead Including 1 Foreigner in Hip-Hop Club Fire, Siem
The foreigner that dies in the fire is Australian.
An Australian man is among five people who have died in a nightclub fire in Cambodia's northwestern tourist hub of Siem Reap.
The blaze broke out at the Hip Hop nightclub in Siem Reap city at around 2am on Tuesday as the result of an electrical fault, provincial police chief Sort Nady said.
"An Australian tourist was among five people who died after suffocating on smoke," he said, adding that two local people were injured in the fire.
olice said the 32-year-old Australian had arrived in Cambodia last week.
They have launched an investigation into the incident, Nady said.
Siem Reap province, home to Cambodia's famed Angkor temple complex, is the country's most popular tourist destination.
It is understood the Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the Australian man's family.

Add to that a LOT of electrical equipment running quite hot for pumping out that sound and drawing a lot of power through the wires and cheap chinese breakers, a lot of hot lights for effects, etc... you get a pretty easy recipe for some fire.General Mackevili wrote:Personally, I just think night clubs are bad setups when it comes to fires.clippy wrote:do you think that this is typical of safety in Cambodian clubs?

The "official reason" and literal last sentence (and this from the media department of the interior ministry who have police reporters and access to crime scene and who often report 'news' and set the tone hours before anybody else) for the deaths is that ទាំងអ្នកស្លាប់ និង រងរបួសនេះ សុទ្ធសឹងជាអ្នកផឹកស្រវឹងជោគជាំ ហើយចូលទៅក្នុងបន្ទប់ទឹក ៕
"the dead and injured were ALL extremely drunk and (ALL) in the bathrooms".
& thus it was ultimately their own fault for being so drunk and on the floors of the toilet...not due to the clubs layout and safety procedures and certainly not due to any failure of government guidelines or inspections.
RIP to all the dead.
