10 dead in helicopter crash- French sport stars

Post by Anchor Moy »

Oh sad, Florence Arthaud was one gutsy lady - solo yachtwoman and lived life to the full. (And she was NOT "la petite fiancee of the Atlantic" as the French media named her - she was a drink all night and die with your boots on sort of person.) Respect.
RIP.
As for the circumstances of the crash...not much news except that the weather was fine and visibility good.
Eight French passengers and their two Argentine pilots died in the crash, a police source said. President Francois Hollande’s office later confirmed the victims included stars Arthaud, Muffat and Vastine.

Arthaud, 57, was considered one of the best sailors in the world, a woman who conquered what had been a strictly male-dominated sport. Her titles included the 1990 Route du Rhum, the most prestigious race to cross the Atlantic solo.

Muffat, 25, was a top swimmer at the London Olympics in 2012, bringing home three medals, including the gold in the 400-meter freestyle.

Vastine, 28, won a bronze medal at the Beijing games in 2008 in the light welterweight category.

“Dropped,” which was to air on French television channel TF1, involved eight sports stars being dropped into inhospitable environments for an adventure- and survival-themed reality show.

It's probably too soon, but there's an opportunity there...

I also like your word genesis:

havery (n); a collection of owned items. "This is not a pile of stuff, this is my havery."

And Harrison Ford crash landed a plane on a golf course this week. No, not a movie, the real Harrison Ford. He walked it off.

Hey, Florence Arthaud is way cooler than HF - and wouldn't be seen dead on a golf course.
(Sorry for the pun.)
Very brief sketch, but she was no actor.F'k knows what she was doing in a TV show: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Arthaud

I couldn't believe the story when I read it this morning, they were filming a reality TV series called " Survivor " and 2 helicopters ferrying contestants managed to have a head on collision enroute to the island. Wtf. Normally in the UK this particular series is made up of pop has beens, page 3 tit models, disgraced politicians, and even minor celebs than the aforementioned, oh and the captain of the most recently humiliated English sports team, be that cricket, rugby or football.

To lose currently active sports achievers to reality TV seems tragic to me.

Let me just log out now in case I might be accused of being non tech savvy or falsely boosting statistics to generate advertising revenue for those cut throat capitalists running this site.

There's been a suggestion on TV news that the helicopter was overloaded - apparently one guy got out at the last minute because of weight concerns.

Oh, and it seems the contestants were all blindfolded when they crashed. Quel horreur.

The two helicopters collided in mid-air during perfect flying conditions just after take-off from a football pitch while filming the second episode of a new adventure show, Dropped, for France’s biggest private TV station, TF1. The programme, an adaptation of a Swedish format, was to feature an all-star cast of French sporting figures taken blindfolded by helicopter and left in the wilderness to find their way back to civilisation. In total, eight French nationals were killed, including crew members, as well as two Argentinian pilots. There were no survivors.
