I've almost never paid a room in advance. Ofc, in the west a hotel would put a block on a debit or credit card.
It just does not make sense. especially for guesthouses having such a small profit margin. I mean FB is full of posts like that.
I'll explain it to you Hanno like I see it - I don't know how the top hotels work, but most of the smaller guest houses run tabs for their customers who order food and drinks from their bar/restaurant. Some of them ask for room rent up front when you first arrive (and passport photos so they should know their nationality), but often, once there's been a 'goodwill payment', then you can stick everything else on the tab. This encourages people who stay at the guesthouse to spend their money there; it's easy, they order now and pay later.

However, $300 is a lot to run up on a tab in Cambodia, so staff need to be cautious. But you know, these people have been staying a long time, so they must be ok...It sort of makes sense.
Frizzie said exactly what I was thinking. Right now, theur Bungalows run at $ a night, so $300 is a huge chunk, relatively speaking.

Not to profile them too much, but who would let them run up a $300 tab? I'd be worried about getting a lighter back from them.

why is this titled
accused?
did they or did they not do a runner?

I never pay in advance, but never run tabs for more than a few days

Seem like gh's in Cambodia are so desperate for guests,( not just now but always) that they are scared to ask for a deposit or ask guests to pay every few days to avoid things like this

SO why havent the guest house got a copy of the passports? It would be a criminal complaint for what they did and that should be enough for immigration to pick them up if they try to rebew a visa or leave

Message from the couple on Kampot Noticeboard social media page today, 24 April 2020:

Masal Sakini‎ to Kampot Noticeboard
Hi everybody
Our names are Işık and Sevgi. This post is not reflecting the truth and very humiliating. We want this share to be removed and expect an appology for this. Yes, we accept that we could not pay 252$ to Kampot River Bungalow, but we do not escape anywhere. We just left with a permit for extension of visa and shopping during this illegal quarantine, and just came late. They required us to check out, since in their eyes we were only tourists not spending much money beside our accommodation, could not turn back to their country due to cancellation of the flights.
Due to quarantine applied in our country, we could not receive the money we were expecting. we left the copies of our passports and ensured them that we would pay the money in a while, however, we could not say an exact time since we, not just us, are in an unprecedented time. We could not imagine the world would experience such a pandemic and we could not turn back to our country in the time we were planning. And we could not withdraw our money and experience such a difficult time. What is worse, their behavior towards us was inhumane and the made us so tired. we left the place in such a desperate and bewildered mood. the next day we tried to set up a life for ourself and Kampot Jungle Village embraced us in a caring and friendly way. And we told everyone, we know from Kampot River Bungalow, where we are living. we are not escaping and we are not hiding. It is really disappointing to see that this post make us look like we did something inhumane and like we are escaping. Moreover, the comments under this posts made us sad and disappointed especially the one made by the place namely “hight “ where we frequently hangout.
In our culture, we learnt to help the ones who are in trouble not to calumniate. We are human not the money as the companies see us.
The only thing we expect you to be more caring and understanding. Here we are, you may visit us any time. our doors are always open to ones carrying love and approaching in a friendly manner.
In Turkey, we have a place namely "Işık Kapısı Art Workshop" we expect you all our friends. we are living there with our beloved ones. Life is beautiful if we share it. With our best regards.

I agree. They would have been better off not to "clarify" things, or at the very least, should have paid up first.

Yeah what total deadbeats. They obviously dont spend money on clothing. And that is nonsense about not being able to receive money due to quarantine. 300 goddamned dollars. They shouldnt travel.

So the post is true. Doesn't really leave them with much to argue about.

They did leave while owing money, they have not paid it back after promising to do so. I'd imagine $300 is a fair bit of money for the guesthouse in these times. Taking advantage of their generosity is pretty disgusting.

Here's hoping they get chucked out of there newest hotel.

so now there staying somewhere else on credit>>>
since the River bungalows now know where they are, cant they go to the police?

Until Gh's start either asking for $$ in advance or putting, say a $100, cap on monies owed
this will continue to happen

Used to read all about this happening on the Islands in Thailand decades ago..
