Could it get any worse than this ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. That's a different Oscar's. Oscar's the rock bar is a bar on st. 104 among the girlie bar, I think the restaurant might have stolen the name, but don't know for a fact.
the oskar fm riverside originally came from bangkok, i was told, the one at riverside its the second branch :thumb:

Oscars, Oskar. Different businesses, the clue is in the spelling

So what happened to Sorya Mall? Still not open ?

Yea i don't like Pontoon either. Anyway at least the north part of Golden Sorya Mall is kind of strange. Stalls of look alike new counters , tables and chairs turned upside down on top of them, that is kind of standard, but NO vendors and of course no customers. Just what are they(whoever that is) planning to happen there and why and what is so sure that they are going to have many customers. The main 'centroid' of customers in that area has seemed to move a little south but the bathrooms behind(west end) that used to be right next to that small non air conditioned loud disco that usually did not open or get going till after 3am in the morning(I don't know if it is still opened or not but was at least of march 2017) have been closed(the bathrooms) and moved further north to that behind new stalls and no customers area almost to the intersecting street 154(i think) on the north border.
I am relatively new to the Phnom Penh GSM area my first visit being december 2015 to Feb. 2016 and according to many old timers the place had already gotten worse by that time relative to prior years. But here is the way I see it's further downfall since 2016.
First walkabout closed i understand in 2016 shortly after that. Also at least in early 2016 there was a bar just behind the main front that sold beers for 75 cents whose lowest priced beers were $1.00.
It seemed to have a rather nice atmosphere then when that young viet nam girl who owned or rented the space was usually always there at night. Then when I came back in early 2017 not only was walkabout closed but she was gone also and that little bar seemed to have lost it's charm. Now this year with the renovation of Golden Sorya mall , at least the north part, the familiar faces and crowds just bordering at the south end of that renovation that used( or still do ?) sell beers for 75 cents seemed to have dispersed. Anyway that whole area just ain't like it used to be as likely many will agree. And as one poster just implied now ones best option is just why bother but might as well just stay home.

You're just experiencing the end of the downfall right now. Between 2010 to around 2015 PP used to have quite a few places I could go, that were not girlie bars. We had good parties at several large places that have now completely disappeared, including pool parties, live music, even a rave one time.
You could actually go out and have fun
without paying a single lady drink and pick up amateur girls from the street who were really not professional hookers, I used to invite them all the time just to join me for a few drinks or a party or for a meal for no reason. Guys who had lived there longer all telling me the golden times were over by then, but I still had a good time.
Sorya mall was always a sleazy place, but for a couple
years it was a good place to warm up and meet some other expats, and then go back at the end of the night when everyone was drunk out of their minds for some after partying. There used to be a couple good locations where you could always expect something, like Rob's bar in Sorya,
or Beer bar for a couple years when the waitresses actually talked to the customers. There's got to be a revival coming after this, a capital city can't stay this way.
I never liked hookers or girlie bars so for me the place I visited regularly all closed one by one. If you stick around you can still find places to hang out but it's nothing like it used to be.

Couple of years ago i was walking around and happen to be in GSM, it seemed lively with Football / Soccer game on, there was so many people and sexy bartenders in one bar so i thought the place was fun, had a couple of beer as i watched the game, Last year i went there and saw the place changed drastically it was sad to see, i didn't like what i saw last year but then again i am not Phnom Penh expert, neither i was there when WA was open, i still went to the lake side restaurant and thought it was cool to have meal with beer with friends there, when i come back soon i hope i am going there again hopefully its still there, also checkout the Oscars and see what will be my next gym there, i like going to gyms in Phnom Penh always there is hot girls, escpecially in the Place at 178.

Instead of moaning, look for solutions!

1. The all new Pub Street/ ex Sorya, is having a grand opening at the end of this month.

2. There are still plenty bars where you can drink 50cent happy hour to 75cent to 1 dollar beers all the time...And PP is getting makeovers in terms of Malls and Cafe culture etc

3. Snookie messed up? Head to the Islands instead.

Went to that Oscars on the corner place and we were immediately turned off at the door. Seems it IS a girlie bar though cannot say 100% sure. What happened is some girl comes out likely working there trying to hustle us inside. Needless to say did not go in after that. Seems like it may be one of those disgusting places with ' ladies ' drinks and hustlers who work for the place. Did not seem it was going to be anything like the old walkabout. By the way to the person who said street 172. Exactly where on 172. I hope you don't mean 'cat' bar nor pontoon. Seems the grand sorya mall has lost all ambience of the past.

How is that any more disgusting than the meth whores who hustle at GSM and used to do the same at Walkabout?
