i think the ease of visas for long termers, the ability to start a little low key business, and the fact that the Khmer people had not been exposed to decades of tourism were the prime attractants in any perceived "golden age"

Yes, they were poorer, but at least had not yet adopted the arrogant predilection for being ostentatious.

I think GSM will be much nicer after the remodelling job but the problem is to find a good mix of customers.
I mean the business owners who rent these new bars want some normal people with money but those people could be scared away by some of the regular customers.
Yesterday for example, I wanted to go into one of these places to have a drink but had to go around the corner because the people who sat there, how can I put it, they just did not look inviting.
And I am not really sensitive about that normally.
One was wearing a T-shirt that said "I fart in your direction"
