Is copying the sincerest form of flattery?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Is copying the sincerest form of flattery?

Post by whiteribbon »

Or is it just a lack of imagination?

As some of you here know, I've recently completed my new house in Kep.
During the whole time everyone was welcome to visit, discuss and get ideas.
Some people showed up without warning, message or call. But I still always gave them a tour since I don't see any harm in that and I'm also quite proud of what we've accomplished. All normal I think.

Getting to the point now, 3 or 4 weeks ago some guys showed up at my gate that I didn't know but seemed friendly etc. They asked to look at the house. I vaguely recognised one of them because another member here is using him as his architect so saw his pic before on social media. So sure, look around.
TODAY, I saw him posting and advertising 'his' design that almost looked exactly like my house, no credit to my architects either. Was quite shocked by that actually. While I understand the fact everyone borrows ideas from everywhere, to see this advertised with some things copied exactly by someone that has nothing to do with it at all, did not feel right.

My architects just told me it's a waste to spend time thinking about people wanting to build a bad quality replica version of my house. Still
pisses me off though.

Your thoughts?

Hm I think everything you see in the last pics I posted is custom made indeed and included, all made by Khmer crafts people. I will update with more pics soon when I've got all the decorating and additional furnishing (like curtains, carpets and sofas) done.

If people want to spend large amounts on building here, why would you have a problem with them copying you? Did you "invent" your house or have you just collated ideas you, yourself, have "stolen" ?

When we had our modest dwelling built, it attracted all sorts of villagers. The only thing that was copied in subsequent homes was our Western toilet and simple sewage system. I considered it a public service especially for older Khmer whose years of toil rendered them uncomfortable with a squat toilet. Oh yeh and the notion of making the bathroom and kitchen two separate rooms was also a novel and highly copied design in future homes.

Obviously our situations differ, but I considered it not flattery, but progress.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

lol there's a big difference between taking ideas and including them in your design and copying. Are you seriously saying that if you and your architects would have come up with YOUR ideal house design and someone you invited to have a look, would copy you exactly you wouldn't be a bit pissed off? I don't believe that.
