Yup! Politely telling them you know the law is the best way to deter them from bribing you.Sailorman wrote:While driving in PP (car/truck) I was pulled over for going straight from a turn lane. They are not marked much ahead of time and in traffic your screwed if your in a turn lane. I had some time so I argued that I averted an accident by going straight and they were not alert and did not see it. When they wanted to give me a ticket and me give them money, I hauled out a copy (from the internet) of their boss (Chief of Police) saying to get a receipt. I demanded a receipt and they took me to the head guy who said I had to get a receipt from the police station. I pointed to the paper a told him that was a incorrect and his boss said so. I told him if he didn't want to give me a receipt to get a higher guy down there. The head guy have me back my license and waved me away.

The law in most countries is that everyone is required to carry their original driver's license or ID at all times, and maybe even carry their passport for foreigners. If you are going to make the police follow the letter of the law, you better be following it too. You have the right to ask for a proper traffic ticket. The police may have the right/responsibility of taking you to jail or to an immigration center and impounding your motorbike, and whatever else the law states for not carrying your proper documents with you.Jacobincambodia wrote: 3. NEVER give your original license over. That's now his leverage. I always carry a copy and usually leave my original at home.
4. Arguing usually commences and I tell the cop I don't carry my original because of corruption.
So fight the corruption all you want. Good for you. Things may take an unexpectedly unpleasant turn for you if the authorities want to play hard ball.

The driver and I were checking the map in the middle of peak hour traffic, so surely the cop just wanted to help.Jacobincambodia wrote:Why would a cop be approaching you in a Tuk Tuk? Didn't have your seatbelt fastened?

Yes true! It goes both ways. However, the second a cop tries to bribe me, he's not going to enforce any kind of law most likely.Soi Dog wrote:The law in most countries is that everyone is required to carry their original driver's license or ID at all times, and maybe even carry their passport for foreigners. Have the ACU number on speed dial.
Re: COPS -- Stop Giving Them Free Money
Genuine Question ---- Does ACU really mean anything? I always considered "Anti-Corruption" and "Cambodia" to be an oxymoron.OrangeDragon wrote:Have the ACU number on speed dial.

Jake, just skip all those steps and start with a new 1. Give him the same serial killer/1000 yard stare that's in your avatar and you should get waved by every time.Jacobincambodia wrote:I know I'm going to get crapped on for this, but I sincerely want to hear everybody's perspective on giving cops bribes. I know it's an easy way to get by, but seriously it helps no one. Just like it's not a good idea to to give money to begging children, it's not a good idea to hand over cash to cops if you don't get a ticket. Do your part and stop feeding the cycle.
I've been pulled over a few times and I've yet to pay a dime for an infraction via a bribe. I'm totally willing to, but the cop refuses to write a ticket! He wants coke, beer and money. I don't give any of it. If you are interested in trying this out, these are normally the steps I take when I make a mistake.
1. Typically, I ask the cop what I did wrong.
2. I acknowledge my horrible sin and he normally asks me for my license next.
3. NEVER give your original license over. That's now his leverage. I always carry a copy and usually leave my original at home.
4. Arguing usually commences and I tell the cop I don't carry my original because of corruption.
5. The cop usually throws a bone and offers an easy way out like paying a small bribe. I simply tell him no.
6. Before he can adjust his bribe, I flat out tell him I understand the law and you have to give me a ticket.
7. He might argue more...
8. You either get the irritated wave off or more arguing commences.
9. If it goes beyond that, I demand to speak to his boss so I can complain. After that, I almost always get the wave off.
Success! The trade off? A few extra minutes of your day and dignity.
I've got some funny cop stories from my time here. Once I got whacked in the back twice with one of those plastic batons they sometimes have, as I made an obviously not wide enough arch past one boy in blue that jumped in front of me. Damn he was sure quick on the draw that day. Left some nice welts on the back. Yowza, guess I deserved it, going right on red and all.

The General was clearly not in uniform, then.OrangeDragon wrote:I have 2 dents in my car because they wouldn't take the dollar I offered and the General and I just said "fuck it then" and drove off.

Yeah, now I have a free pass around town since I helped them yank that stuck ambulance off of the concrete divider with my truck though, lol.
