Re: Close calls in the KOW
It happens to me so regularly that I've stopped keeping track of white-knuckle moments, as Joe from Mekong Crossing described them.
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right?

Re: Close calls in the KOW
One I remember was as I was running in Temple Town. I always run against traffic as I want to at least see who will kill me one of these days. I saw this huge Lexus coming my way with the lady behind the wheel busy chatting away. Now I say this without trying to offend anyone but most Khmer cannot drive at the best of times. Add a mobile phone into the equation and you are courting disaster. So I kept an eye on the lady and sure enough she mounted the pavement and only a leap saved me from becoming a hood ornament. Of course she stopped and inquired about my well-being, all they time excusing herself profusely.
Another moment where I wished I was still smoking was as I was driving to ATT early in the morning. Still dark but no traffic. Well, except one truck that came my way, lights blazing. As he passed me, I was completely blind but more sensed than saw something on the road. I pulled to the left side and missed a steam roller by about 2 inches. They had started fixing the Poipet road but decided that moving the equipment off the road, or marking it in any way, was too much bother......
Dozens of more examples like these in 20 years in SE Asia........ No accidents in the Kingdom but three motorbike accidents in Vietnam.

Haha had no intention of this being a traffic accident related thread necessarily. Even though my first 2 were. Could just as easily be about dodgy wiring or bathroom sinks falling off, smashing and severing arteries. That kind of stuff.

Re: Close calls in the KOW
Riding back from Snoul a few weeks back, empty section of Hwy 8 east of the road to Prey Veng town. Had whole visible stretch to myself in front and behind, so was cruising in the middle of my lane at ~100km/h. Approaching roadworks up ahead with a barrier covering 90% of the opposite lane, didn't think much of it, nothing in the mirrors a few hundred metres out. Just as I came up on the barrier, probably 10m before, a Camry came blasting past at around 140km/h, trying to get around me and cutting in front of me while braking to avoid the barrier on the other side. Probably 30cm between my front tyre and their bumper at 100km/h. Fun times.
