City Hall strikes hard on bars with signs and awnings overhanging the pavement

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

City Hall strikes hard on bars with signs and awnings overhanging the pavement

Post by Matthew Robinson »

It's remarkable how quickly Street 136 bar owners have obeyed Phnom Penh's City Hall order to tear down garish awnings and signs overhanging the pavements. All owners, no matter how well-connected, were given three days to comply or - who knows? Now, City Hall, please stop mobile selling contraptions attached to blaring loudspeakers touring the streets day-and-night. This is already against local by-laws but never enforced.

Parking places are desperately needed.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

All girlie bars should have sewing machines in them teaching foreigners how to sew and making masks for guys while they stand around having a beer or two.

Imagine for a second that nightlife girlie bars will be banned. Completely. This is not impossible. What share of tourism/expat money will be lost? What are your projections?

Well, there goes all the outdoor seating for the ladies at scores of those hole in the wall bars. I don't see the point of doing this. What? They want the sidewalk open instead of a bunch of people walking in the street? It's still going to be crammed with venders and tuk tuks.

Not if this is a step to a complete ban. Then no vendors nor tuktuks because no customers for them.
