City Hall strikes hard on bars with signs and awnings overhanging the pavement

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

one would think that clearing Sisowath quay of the same would be more impactful to more people but it hasn't been done, you will often have to move out in to the main road to avoid pathways half blocked by a terrace with the balance blocked by parked motos or cars

This is absolutely nothing new. It happens every year to 18 months to Khmer and Forigen business alike all over PP.

I say it's no coincidence that it's happening in the run up to the replacement KNY holiday.

This too will pass.

^^ Right. Just a job creation scheme. Those guys pulling down the awnings today will be re-employed next month to put up new ones.

Well, due to the shutdown, we are seeing things in a more linear fashion than normal
I've seen this shit, and experienced it myself, more than a few times.

I wonder if the business owners are being charged a fee for the tear-down?

Nothing to see here. It's like when they clear out the road that runs through the "expanded" Psar Chas every few years. It'll be back to normal faster than you can say "al fresco".

The owners have to remove the metal roof awnings at their own expense. Failure to do so results in the police employing a contractor to roughly rip it down - and charge the owner for doing it.
So far almost all owners are choosing to do it themselves, to make sure it’s a neater job.
Plastic retractable awnings are allowed. These may extend right up to near the pavement edge.
Now short white paint lines have appeared on the pavement, about 1.5 metres from the building line, demarcating the limit for street furniture. This seems to be largely being ignored by bars.
