chinese in cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

chinese in cambodia

Post by tightenupvolume1 »

been reading on here re lots of chinese moving into cambodia. Is this recent? what are they doing in cambodia, surely they are not needed for work, or maybe they are. Do they change the vibe of the place? ie the bars, restuarants etc. How do the locals feel about them and is it set to continue?

so its not a recent influx then? I got the impression from some of the posts on here that there is a chinese invasion! and lots of resentment.
Just curious thats all.

Chinese people have been here for generations. They have integrated into the Khmer society and often refer to themselves as Khmer-Chinese. (Not a problem with anyone).

More recently, Chinese companies have been moving in with big bucks and bringing in their own people. I myself am a casualty of a Chinese business takeover (whiteys out, chinese in. Bye bye).

The biggest notable or observable influx of Chinese has probably been in Sihanoukville where the big bucks have bought out almost everything, brought in their own people and just running online gambling or VoIP scams.
But don't worry, there's more money coming soon. The new Macao, new ports at Kampot, etc.

They've been here since the time of the Khmer Empire and probably before. So more than a millennium. They'll be here for long after all the long-noses are gone.

I notice a lot more Chinese men than woman around. Has anyone else noticed this trend?
