Beetween other Chineses with sketchy or rude behavior, and the feeling to have falled into a "kind of lesser educated / refined" society, i would bet she doesn't feel well here.

You could test it by evocating the possibility of leaving Cambodia for another country, see how she reacts ?

Chinese in general don't treat merchants very well. In Shanghai especially (and the areas around it), part of the art of negotiation is to treat merchants like swindling, garbage selling cheats; that's simply how you get a good deal in a market or other situation where negotiations are involved.

I tried treating merchants in Thailand and southern China like that, and it failed miserably. But in Shanghai, works like a charm.

I’ve witnessed many Chinese tourists being especially rude to locals. And in general Khmer people are too docile and passive to stand up to them so they appear weak to the Chinese, who think they are the best people in the world. I’m American and I’ve been the victim of rude, pushy chinese people from time to time but not nearly to the extent of what the locals put up with. I’ve watched many a rude Chinese person almost bring a poor cashier or clerk to tears, always over something fucking stupid and insignificant, which always boils down to to the Chinese superiority complex. It makes my blood boil. I’ve been to 13 countries and in each one, I learned a few words of the language and researched cultural respect items. Literally took me 20 minutes and allowed me to be a much more respectful tourist. My bf is Khmer and is a Mandarin speaking tourist guide. He has to deal with these people all day and it’s always the same. They come here, treat everyone like shit, act like fucking uncivilized animals, and leave nothing but bad impressions. The locals are trapped because Chinese tourism is their bread and butter - I’m confident that if there was another way to make the same money they’d just as soon never deal with the Chinese again.

Try dealing with the hordes of them (not now thank god) in Bangkok, god forbid they should do something like stand orderly in a line or something. I alsmost hip checked one into the Chao Phraya off the Sathron Pier one day because he tried to shove past me, and the Thai pier dude gave me a subtle smile and a thumbs up.

My kid speaks halting Chinese but understands a lot from living there, she says they constantly insult non Chinese...

Personally I hate going there. Rude, rude, rude.

I’ve dealt with them in almost every country I’ve been to - they’re everywhere. And always the same: rude, pushy, loud, arrogant. I’ve been pushed out of the way, hit with shopping carts, and yelled at to move. To this day i just give it right back. Some lady used her cart to shove me out of the way (while making eye contact) in a grocery store the other day because she was trying to take a picture of vegetables and I was inconveniencing her by shopping. So I looked right at her and shoved her and her her basket backwards right into her group of fellow tourists. She was not expecting that and quickly walked around me to another aisle. And that’s not the first or last time. If a chinese is treating the cashier like shit in my line, I’ll talk shit about them in Khmer to the cashier, they usually get a chuckle out of that and it shows them that I’m not another dickhead tourist.

A few years ago I was in IBC with my wife and I was severely hung over.....I was next in line at the cashier and as I put my things on the counter a Chinese guy on his cell phone just barged in front of me.

Without looking at him I just raised my arm, thumped my hand against his chest and slowly moved him back.

All the while I was waiting for the feeling of his fist against my head but it never came. He just stayed back and didn't do anything.

After we left my wife whispered to me "Don't do that again." Lol.

There tends to be a lack of common courtesy with the Chinese when compared to what we expect in the west.

There was a quote from some movie....it was in reference to the Russians but I think it's applicable to the Chinese as well.

It was something like."They only understand action, they only respect force." or something like that.

Arrogance and ignorance are a national trait among the Chinese.

I think you have to accept that Chinese are generally quite coarse and rude. I was once in a queue at KL airport waiting to go through security when a Chinese guy slithered right past me to join his friend in front of me. Had he tapped me on the shoulder and intimated that he would like to join his compatriot then that would have been fine, but since he didn't, I walked past and cut in front of them both. At this point, they started kicking off and tapped, shouted and gesticulated that I had wronged them. All a bit tense for a few seconds, but nothing came of it. Just an example of their arrogance and, as other have said, superiority complex.

Chinese display a different level of manners than most westerners, not just when they travel abroad but in their country too. Perhaps it has to do with living a country where if you don t climb over the back of those ahead of you don t succeed, perhaps it is living cheek to jowl with your neighbor. I remember when "the ugly American" was considered the uncivilized tourist. Personally I try to avoid, Indian, Russian and Chinese tourists unless I am at the beach and then Germans with their penchant for speedo swimsuits coupled with oily beer bellies is the stereotypical tourist to keep clear of. The French with their unwarranted arrogance, the Australians with their odd English language and of course the British who can t seem to drink and not get punchy all are poor company to travel with.

Op, aside from her dealings with the locals how is your wife doing? Is she happy? Is it too much culture shock? Are there problems in your relationship? You think she's changed her attitude to interactions with local people.
I would be talking to Her to find out what's going on.
Of course that takes all the China bashing fun out of things
