Cheap booze recomendations to help us through this tough time?
I didn't find any recent booze threads in my search. What's your favorite Cheap spirit? I love a good scotch as much as most anyone, but I'm riding out my time in Cambodia with no job right now, and nothing to do at home all day. I know there are plenty in the same situation. Let us come together and help out our brothers and sisters in this tough time of need!
My votes for now are
Rum - Old Nick. I honestly can't believe this stuff. It's $5.50/liter. The white and dark rums are both just amazing for the price. Probably the best value I've ever come across for cheap, unoffensive liquor. Does it have a ton of character? No. Does it taste like rum and is actually smooth and Completely unoffensive? Somehow absolutely yes.
Gin - I have a bottle of Windsor right now. It kinda falls into the same boat as the Old Nick in that it's nothing special, but not offensive. It's kinda "expensive" for my current, no job and living on savings, budget at $8.50/bottle. Anyone got anything cheaper that's drinkable?
Whiskey - I'd love to find a really cheap whiskey that'll make a drinkable Manhattan. They're my favorite. Any suggestions? So far I'm just using Teacher's scotch at $11.00/liter. Totally not bad for cheap scotch, but again, if there's anything cheaper that's drinkable, I'd love to hear about it. Scotch, bourbon, general whiskey, whatever.
Beer - Always seems be around $.50/can. I kinda doubt there's anything I'd wanna drink that costs less, but again, I'd love to hear some suggestions.
I'm not really a vodka drinker, but I'm sure someone here is. What's the cheapest drinkable vodka?
I like to make sours and daiquiris, etc. For the lime juice I'd recommend using the lime powder you can buy at the supermarket. It's not as good as Fresh lime juice, but is surprisingly decent. On the plus side, it's also a lot less work than juicing fresh limes and is actually better than 2-3 day old lime juice. No need to juice every day you want a citrus cocktail. I've had trouble with bitter limes in Cambodia anyway, so this is now my go-to.
I've been doing most citrus drinks for around $.40-50/drink including booze, lime, simple, and any little ingredients I want to add(rosemary simple for some gin drinks, etc). Manhattan type drinks tend to cost more like $1, so I've been doing less of those. Feel free to let me know if anyone wants some simple recipes or something to pass the time stuck inside. Feel free to share your recipes.

Do you think the parents of baby boomers whined so much when the boomers started changing society? And yet the whiney ones like to call young people "snowflakes." Hmm...

To be really cheap, why not make your own? Theres tons of information and beer and wine making kits out there. Once you get good at that go into distillation and ageing of your own hard liquors. The possibilities are endless.

Well yes, you are correct that for the very long game, making my own would indeed be cheaper. I did actually get a little into homebrewing for a bit back home. But I'm more just looking to share some good value buys in this immediate time, while many of us are suddenly living on budgets and stuck at home with not much to do.

Haha. I'm hoping things here don't get that bad, but we'll see. I'll let you know if I get down to nothing but rice to eat and making my own hooch in the kitchen sink.michael.stewart1 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 7:21 am just get some yeast and juice from the supermarket and mix it together. let it sit for a few days and you will be in lala land like I am.

If I had to worry about the cost of a bottle of good booze, I wouldnt be in Cambodia. But hey, weed is cheap.

WildA Is it really that cheap, since I came to the big city I made do with the happy pizza places. There was some really good ones too, medium pepperoni with a good herb topping it kind of kills two birds with one stone. Feeding you and getting stoned, or getting stoned and can't be bothered to eat. That become a problem! I left half the pizza once for breakfast the following morning, but it was gone when I looked, ever tried copping with a stoned Khmer girlfriend.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Well, I'm (temporarily) living in Thailand and appreciate Cambodian booze prices. I remember paying about US$23/735 THB for a litre of Black Label at the Monivong drinks shop, near Thai Huot. In Thailand it's $60/1700+THB, which it's been for a few years now. And Thai beer (Leo) was cheaper in Cambo than in Thailand. I think it still is.
Re: Cheap booze recomendations to help us through this tough time?
I bought a box of 24 Leo cans here yesterday for $10.90 (356.03 THB). How much in Thailand?
