CEO rules, playing nice and karma

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

sort of a leaderboard. it would make it have more "meaning" i think, and maybe discourage those seeking to get maximum negative.
You could calculate a posters PQS (posting quality score). This would show how many posts he/she posts for each karma point earned. The lower the score, the better.
For example, Rain Dog only has to make about 2.6 posts before someone gives him karma. Stroppy Chops on the other hand has to make 13.5 posts before getting any karma.

Rain Dog 333 posts / 127 karma = 2.6 posting quality score (PQS)
EdinWigan 429 posts / 138 karma = 3.1 posting quality score (PQS)
giblet 351 posts / 75 karma = 4.6 posting quality score (PQS)
StroppyChops 2658 posts / 200 karma = 13.5 posting quality score (PQS)
OD 2382 posts / 122 karma = 19.5 posting quality score (PQS)

my goal/plan for the implementation is to take a poll... the top 2 of the poll will get put in place, we'll test them for a while... get feedback/etc... then look at more/different solutions if desired.
Do the winners get Karma Points or just a lame group hug Gmach style?

Then you have the occasional jackass who craves the honor of having the most negative karma and behaves accordingly. For this reason I no longer use the karma function.

I agree with phuketrichard's idea of a like and dislike button (or youtube-style thumbs up and thumbs down) next to each post. It's less personal and more related to particular comments. But regardless, I agree with Giblet. We should all make an effort to let things go, and not feel the need to win every online argument. Get your point across and then let the last-word freaks have their day.

Any parts of a thread that degrade into an overly heated slag-fest should be removed from that thread and moved to their own thread in the asinine area asap.
I like to reward folks for a good thoughtful or helpful post. We don't necessarily need to do this through karma points. A simple peck on a Like button is good enough and doesn't even have to ID the gifter. In terms of karma points, if there any difference between 97 positive points and 213 positive points. Not really. But yeah, I never used the negative karma thing for exactly soi dog's reason. You take away a kid's toy and he screams and lashes out like, well, a little red-faced snot. A poster with few if any Likes to his credit in his profile is to his/her own discredit.

But, I also like the idea of Thumbs Up or Down on posts, displayed for all to see. A gifter does not have to be identified with credit/discredit. Not necessary at all. It also gives Admins a picture of the board's overall feeling for the post/thread and, given a pattern of poor/aggressive/trolling/juvenile/ posts, a picture of the poster should there be a need to give this poster some timeout in the corner.

Ahhh, just leave it as it is. I'm pretty sure that the majority of posters is able to cope with the existing system. It's not bad at all.

P.S.: sorry for chatting in the "BugZone". I didn't know.

Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

The idea of karma was a good one, but like so many other good ideas, it made a false assumption, namely that people would be sensible in applying it.

I lost karma simply for disagreeing politely with one guy when the place first started.

People who take any sort of disagreement like that should not be allowed out of the nursery.

lol, I lost Karma because I was to busy at work to check the forum for a day. Funnily enough, the fella who took it off me, defended himself a couple of days earlier, after being abused for being to slow to answer another posters question, by saying he actually had a life aside from internet forums and was to busy to answer! I actually think its a bit ridiculous and a "LIKE" button would do the trick. I mean, what is this - a popularity contest? No, its a bloody internet forum and thats ALL it is.
