Celebrating Thanksgiving in Cambodia.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Celebrating Thanksgiving in Cambodia.

Post by Anchor Moy »

I just noticed it is that time of year again, and it seemed to me that Thanksgiving is a largely undeveloped holiday in Cambodia. In a country that celebrates just about any holiday from anywhere without reason, there is still a lot of potential here that is not being exploited.
I think the biggest problem is that it's a bit low-key for Cambodia - not enough fireworks and dressing up, no Santa Claus, funny hats or tinsel.
The selling point for Thanksgiving in Cambodia is that it's a HOLIDAY, and we love holidays. But how to celebrate ? :santa:
All suggestions welcome.

January 7 & November 9 sorta pass for there Thanksgiving. But I'm with you on this. Let's find a way to make it more festive for Khmer.
Like in the Caribe who have adopted many holidays from other cultures. Cultural appropriation on a good scale.

Actually I doubt few Khmer have a clue about USA's or Canada's Thanksgiving, (2nd. Mon. Oct).
Only January 1 & Dec. 25th (Festivus). Also February 14. They are big on that one. It's the deflowering day.

Me, I'll eat, drink & watch NFL & eat, drink & nap. Rinse & repeat.

Happy Thanksgiving to all expats.
I'm just so happy we have nearly rid the world of those evil natives in what is now the USA. Be proud.

Veni vidi vici ! :assasin:

Why would Cambodians celebrate Thanksgiving, it's strictly an American holiday. Sure, some hotels and restaurants will put on events for expats, but why try to get Cambodians to adopt and celebrate it.

dont hv to ask khmer to adopt this holiday, could just celebrate in your own house and ask some khmer friends to join, plus include some khmer style debauchery, i.e. blast some khmer music, dance around in a circle, after 30mins find some excuse to start a fight, bring the fight out onto the streets and wake up the whole neighbourhood :beer1:
Money is not the problem, the problem is no money

Why would Cambodians want to celebrate the slaughter and sidelining of indigenous Americans by European colonists? That whole sharing a turkey dinner between the Puritans and natives is total nonsense. More likely they were going between periods of starving sometimes and feasting on their enemy's livers at other times. At the same time, a Moan Kong and some pumpkin dishes always go down well.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

"feasting on their enemy's livers"

A little extreme, wouldn't you say?
But now that you mention it, lets.

i've talked to a few about it. it doesn't involve a gift so most don't care, and they didn't care for the traditional thanksgiving foods.

Oh well, for the next fun public holiday we have International Human Rights Day coming up on December 10.
No demonstrations, no marches and no colour co-ordinated clothing. And definitely no fire-works.

Makes Thanksgiving sound exciting. 8-)

Harvest thing? You mean August Bank holiday? I think they should celebrate Guy Fawkes day.
