Celebrating Thanksgiving in Cambodia.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I saw that turkeys in lucky supermarket were $6+/lb----normally (on sale) in the states around 80 to 95 cents to the pound.

a wee bit salty that.

will be calling the family later tonight....am in the US.

have a happy turkey day folks!

(the real question is, will we get any NFL on the tele!)

cheers

So, is this Thanksgiving thing compulsory world-wide now?

And, what exactly are we giving thanks for?

John Bingham wrote:Why would Cambodians want to celebrate the slaughter and sidelining of indigenous Americans by European colonists? That whole sharing a turkey dinner between the Puritans and natives is total nonsense. More likely they were going between periods of starving sometimes and feasting on their enemy's livers at other times. At the same time, a Moan Kong and some pumpkin dishes always go down well.
Sorry that you feel this way. But it wasn't a celebration of slaughtering the natives or whatever nonsense you believe. Sorry to shatter your revisionist ideas.

It was a celebration of being alive. Over half the colonists died the winter before. They were resorting to cannibalism to survive. The site they were on used to be a native village that was wiped out by the plague. The natives took pity on them. One of the natives was a survivor of that village (he had been away when the plague struck.)

Thanksgiving used to be this quaint festival that one could only experience in New England, that slowly spread throughout the country.

I'll get off my soapbox rant now.

Providing we buy into that ever so touching scenario. You can be certain that was not written or detailed by the natives.

And how did these natives come to have the plague? Hmmm?
Was it possibly from the rats off the ships that carried the ''pilgrims?

Plagues and epidemics do happen naturally. Everything bad in the world wasn't solely caused by rich white men. History channel ran the multi part series about Thanksgiving a while back.
