US-Cambodia SCAM with Fake Accident

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Re: Car crash 3-Aug? US Citizen in critical condition?

The scam ? At a guess - 1/ Smartphone stolen from the guy in PP 2/Girlfriend contacted with the phone by a guy who says he's the interpreter. 3/a message that Doug has had a terrible accident and needs money transferred for hospital fees, send immediately by Western Union or equivalent.

For some reason, Lea realises that its a scam - she contacts his work or whatever and learns that there's no accident but Doug has had his phone stolen.

Pure speculation of course, i wasn't there. It would be really useful if the people involved would share their story, so that other people won't have to go through the same thing. Expats tried to help you, it would be nice to help others. Get the word out.

Would be very good to hear more of how this scam works.
Agreed and it would be even better if the OP pursued this further with the competent authorities. If this is how it went down, then Mr. Vannak needs a good, sharp rap on is knuckles.
Or on his miniscule appendage.

In Summary: I met a man on a dating website in the US (don't judge me, please). The name he gave me was Douglas Webster, originally from Italy but now living in the US. We were from different coasts and we talked via email, text and phone for over 2 months. He said he was going to Cambodia as a contractor as he had recently been awarded the job and would be building a bridge in Phnom Phenn. He supposedly arrived on Monday morning in Cambodia, met with his interpreter on Tuesday morning. The interpreter's name was Phay Vannak and his email address is [email protected], Phay invited him to his house for dinner on Tuesday night (August 2nd). I received a photo from that night (supposedly). Then on August 4th I received an email from Phay Vannak saying there had been a "ghastly" accident involving the man I was talking to "Doug" and a drunk driver, the drunk driver was supposedly killed by the crash and Doug was in critical condition. Money was needed to have a surgery performed to save Doug's life.
Phay Vannak may be a name used by Doug Webster and no one in Cambodia is connected to this scam.
I never sent money but did send messages to Phay and Doug for them to contact the US Embassy. And I asked for the name of the hospital.
I have a feeling none of the names are the real names of the people involved.

I appreciate the support y'all have shown...yes I'm from the south, lol
And I will be fine.
Please respond if you have any information.

Also: Doug and I never met. we have talked since this happened and he still says it is all true but offers no proof...he is the source of the scam.

Thanks for clarifying that. I feel bad for you but at least we know where the scam originated.

I wonder if he was ever in Cambodia. I'm thinking not.

Or else he does live here and scams people from afar.

Do you want to post the photo he sent you?

I don't think he was ever in Cambodia. I would be happy to post the pictures, but don't know how. The "hospital" photo is what alerted me to the scam, it was photo shopped. The x-ray sent was fishy too.
