Cans for Cats

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. The only problem being that many dogs here are fed on scraps and whatever they can scavenge. I wasn't doing much cooking so I had to go around to Pencil and buy cans of food. It was fucking $2.50 a can or something, way more expensive than human food at the time.
Canned pet food is expensive. It costs about the same here as it does in the US, making it comparatively crazy expensive. If it ever happens again, get yourself the big ass bag of dry food. It's a much cheaper approach, and the dog should still be happy to not dig through the garbage or eating leftover bones and old food.

A bit off topic but there was a 'do cats catch rats' discussion here: post318362.html#p318362

I think the upshot was most don't but some do..

Nothing wrong with trying to help innocent animals in need. They need someone to. Anyone who's gonna slam you for that is an asshole.
Nothing wrong with it at all.. I work with people (NGO) and there are still no shortages of assholes to hate on my work either..

That's true. If there's one thing I've learned with certainty in life, it's that there's never a shortage of assholes. Keep up the good fight.

In fairness, I think many people (myself included) don't hate the work that NGOs do or most ordinary NGO employees, but the massive "overhead" that many NGOs have for no legitimate reason.

Unfortunately, many NGOs are (mis) managed by former politicians and their cronies who skim off way too much money that could otherwise be put to good use.

After having read far too many credible reports of ineptitude, waste and thievery, nowadays I'd rather make a contribution towards a worthy Go Fund Me than donating to a classic charity or NGO. As with so many other things, it's the bad apples that leave a lingering taste!

I'm a cat lover. However, somehow I'm not ok with buying canned cat food for $1.50 a can for 'street cats' in Cambodia. (Im presuming that these cats that are getting fed are homeless strays ?)
It's a lot more work, but on every level, IMO it is better to buy some cheap raw meat and cook it up and add some rice. A Khmer cat that doesn't eat rice is not going to live long. This is cheaper, more environmentally-friendly (cans are not great), and closer to what these cats are used to eating. As I said, I love cats, but in my experience, if you start to feed them on Sheba (canned cat food) or tins of tuna, or whatever processed foods they might enjoy, then they get picky and unhappy if you start feeding them standard stay-alive food scraps. Cambodian cats don't naturally eat tinned cat food, but they get to like it fast, just like humans like to eat fast food.

Not slamming anyone's efforts to help stray cats, but surely in the long run, it's better to give them 'real' food. The pet food industry is not something worth supporting anyway, and do you know what's in the cans ? (Lots of water anyway.)
Sorry if this is not helpful Roz, but I have a thing about the complete waste of space that is canned pet food, especially in the context of countries where it is a struggle to feed the population.

Johanna takes cats off the street and gets them desexed. She cares for them in her home so she really is doing what she can to help the problem.

She doesn’t normally do fundraising, but these are extraordinary times we are living in and I felt she could use the help. I’m picking one cause at a time and at the moment, this is it.

Thank you to everyone who has been kind and supportive.

I should add - this fundraiser is to cover 7 cans a day for 26 cats. They also eat dry food (kibble) and some other stuff.

I will cover the dry food for the next couple of months.
