It always amazes me that barangs understand when other barangs do stupid shit under teh influence of alcohol/drugs, but expect locals to be good boys/girls when they do the same.
I can't help feeling it's a slightly colonial outlook.

Yeah, why don't we hear of the stories where 10 tourists have beaten up 1 or 2 Khmers. Fairs fair after all.
Let's ask Jamie.
^ This. Mainly Khmer, but one or two barang after a bit of cash too.6EQUJ5 wrote:No idea what sparked this altercation but JJ's is prime territory for predators of all sorts in search of easy targets. Lots of scumbags hanging around in the wee hours waiting for that lone barang who wanders off by themselves, so drunk that he or she can barely walk let alone defend themselves against a mugging or a rape. I'm surprised this particular incident involved a party of more than one. Maybe in this case it was an insult/loss of face type of situation that got things started...who knows.
^100% true this. They reported it on local radio as such. Those fucking big nosed barang. Never the pig nosed Khmer. Actually it should be reported as dogey crims. Lots of money floating around and no police to control those in search of easy money or women. In fact the police are often in collusion.Fourkinnel wrote:I've not been in that crap house since they used to be near the pier! This was when they did the booze cruises that nearly cost people their lives by overloading a 45.people boat with more than 90. When it sank everybody got rescued but could have been much worse. But the worst of it was JJ's blamed the boat capsizing by a few dancing on the top deck and paid the police off then the newspapers to report it in the words" it was the "long Nose's dancing on the roof that caused the problem". Some went back to JJ's complain and ask for their money back and were told to fuck off!

Did you miss those huge parties on the beach the Dolphin used to have before the police stopped them?
I think it was JJ's that was set up in direct competition to Dolphin. I'm also pretty sure it was JJ's that sent gunmen round to the Dolphin a few years ago because the Khmer owner was jealous that everyone preferred Dolphin. Iirc they took away Dolphin's sound system at gun point.Jamie_Lambo wrote:haha, yeah he doesnt have a blue eye and blood stained shortsAnchor Moy wrote:Looks like Jamie's in the clear.General Mackevili wrote:No need; they barely look scratched.logos wrote:Anybody checked out Jamie lambo's alibi yet?
tbh JJ's is a short walk away from the other bars situated on the otherside of the walk through street, its a dark and shady area round there in the early hours, with moto drivers hanging around trying to sell drugs n shit, ive seen a few fights on my drunkenly strolls between khmers and backpackers, when it involves the locals though its best not to get involved, there was actually a drunken fight between backpackers one of the last time i was in JJ's actually,
the backpacking crowd over the past couple of years seems to of changed a fair bit, so many fucking idiots about, i avoid the beach at night now if i can get away with it, its rarely a pleasant experience, although i do show up sometimes around 4am when most of the crowds have gone home and i stand and have a drink with my mate whos bar manager at dolphin,
a lot of my khmer friends prefer going to JJ's out of all the beach bars, because of all the freelancers/ladyboys/sex tourists on the dolphin side

Two things spring to mind about your comparison.Hotdigr wrote:Did I say " DON'T"? I said " Dont' make a habit of" which would suggest that it isn't a regular occurrence. And it isn't.You seem to have missed the emphasis on " WITHOUT GOOD REASON TO" And that was my main point. Don't quote out of context mate. And for every incident you want to pull up about Shihanoukville, I will pull up 10 from similar tourist based towns in Australia that will show it really is a lot safer here ,then say for example, The Gold Coast or Byron Bay ( and I'm sure with just a little resaerch I could do the same for tourist towns anywhere in the world). Sensationalising this is bullshit and if you don't realise that then you are either ignorant or just another fukn troll. Either way, you obviously have no fukn idea about Sihanoukville. Yes, its a tough town, most tourist towns are. Act like a fukwit, you will be in trouble, sometimes very bad trouble. Show respect, keep your shit together and you PROBABLY won't have any problems.6EQUJ5 wrote:Then I guess robbing or raping somebody is a "damn good reason to do so." Let's not pretend that our Khmer hosts are a bunch of angels. This country has a serious ice problem and a population of men with a very short fuse. Combine that with alcohol intoxication and cultural issues surrounding "loss of face" and you have a recipe for some seriously stupid violence.Hotdigr wrote:The locals DON'T make a habit of bashing random foreigners, without a damn good reason to do so.
1. Police. Australia have them. Real ones.
2. Reporters. Australia have them. Real ones.
Just because it isn't reported, doesn't mean it never happened. That goes for violent robbery, rape; both attempted and actual and even deaths.
The real question to ask is, Why are some reported and some not?

i cant remember who with but i/we was talking about this last night (or could have been the night before) but yeah we were discussing this, as there was still a bitter rivalry between JJ's and Dolphin even when i has a spell working there about 3 years ago to help out Dan Virak,
if any of JJ's staff were ever seen in Dolphin (even on their day off) they would be instantly fired, i once got myself in to a bit of shit after giving some of their barang staff shit on beach road then threatening to go over to JJ's, some khmer staff came up to me the next night and dished out a few death threats trying to chase me out of town, which never worked lol
they still throw huge beach parties on special occasions (well they did last season anyway) although not sure if they can do anymore now with the clearance of the beach
