Thing is GC, not everyone can swim from childhood, so :hattip: to those who learnt as adults.

(And if Soi Dog could do it, I'm sure you could too Samouth . Why not ? Ask your barang friends to teach you.)

In a lot of countries where swimming is part of the culture, you learn at school, or your parents teach you, but in places like Cambodia I think most of the adults can't swim so they don't teach their children - not even just how to stay afloat unfortunately.
It's a good thing to wear a life-jacket, but that doesn't teach you to swim or to stay afloat if there's an accident.

Besides, it's really fun. :Yahoo!:

Not to mention, most of us doesn't realise that swimming is a compulsory skill that everyone should know as it can save our life.
Swimming isn't part of any curriculum that I know of. However, lessons are readily available in most communities. I took classes for years and could technically be a lifeguard, but I never took the test. But it's one those skills I'm so happy to have. I would definitely get my kids some lessons. In my opinion, it's an essential skill.

It was really sad, when i visited Green house, everyone swam across the river and i just swam next to the bank. :(. I am surprised all white people i saw there know how to swim and they are really good at it. Actually most of my friend tried to get me to swim with them, but i was not brave enough. They also said they would save me if i happen to drown lolzz. I will go for some swimming lessons to build my confident.

All of my barang friends said they learned it at school and some of them learned it when they were really young. They all said it was part of the school curriculum. They are German and Australian. So i have no ideas about other developed countries.

I don't know how to swim. I went to elementary and middle school in the inner city and there was no pool. When my family moved to the suburbs in high school, everyone knew how to swim so there were no beginning classes - it was expected you knew. It is funny you mention Green House because I actually was in the same situation there a few years ago and it sucked. I keep meaning to learn, but never find the time.

I can swim too. Learned it during the first holiday with my parents in Croatia - was 4 or 5 - and my father threw me into the water. That's the way many kids in this area learn how to swim and tho it wasn't the nicest experience in my life it worked out. Pretty good swimmer nowadays and been to the beaches (and into the world) mostly every day since I arrived in Snooky.

When i was at Green House, there was a Scuba diving trainer asked me why i didn't join my friends, then i said i couldn't swim. lolzz. Since, i am Asian, so people seemed to be no surprise about me for not knowing how to swim, but you are white. Poor you MekongMouse.

My fiancee couldn't until I taught her to at least float and swim (versus straight out panic mode).

I don't think learning to swim was high on their family's priority list when growing up in the late 80s here in Province Cham, Cambodia.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

I could beat some of the kids in high school that were on the swim team, so I've always considered myself a good swimmer (famous words before drowning, I'm sure).

That said, I never "dive" into the water. I can, but I hate getting water in my ears so I just never do it.

Oh, and I turned this into a poll. Why not, LoL.
Ha, Talk about spoilt rich kids, ,, The only pool I knew as a kid was a dirty puddle on the dirt road half a k from our house. [ if you could call it a house ] Hence , I never learnt to swim and still cannot swim.
I would even drown in a glass of beer.
Haha, that probably sounded more glamorous than it was.

Was definitely lucky to have had so much pool access growing up, and almost always lived within a couple hours of a beach.

Ironically it was my redneck relatives down south that had the first pool I can remember.

And you just reminded me: I even used to go swimming at Muhammad Ali's house in Michigan which had a pool. I can't remember exactly, but I think he was just really cool and let anyone come over and swim there on weekends. He would even be out there sometimes doing magic tricks, LoL.

Also used to swim in the flooded canals on the family farm in Texas/New Mexico. That was scary because there where whirlpools. I think the only rules were "don't swim alone and don't swim near the whirlpools," LoL.

Did have a cousin that drowned on the farm there, but I think it was because a cable cart going across one of the bigger canals snapped and maybe they couldn't swim or something.
