Cambodians return home

Post by phuketrichard »

"So many have nowhere to go, but they would rather be homeless in Cambodia than dare to go back to Thailand,”

Official government figures list 7,500 Cambodian workers deported over the first nine days of June, but rights groups say the number is even higher, with more than 10,000 and counting streaming over the border, more than half of them women and children.

“Many industries in Thailand would come to a standstill if the migrants were not here, including the manufacturing industry, seafood processing, fishing industry, fruit orchards, rubber plantations, the list is endless,” said Kanchana Di-ut, program director at Thai NGO MAP Foundation.

If the same happens to the Burmese labors ( which do 90% of the construction work in Phuket) things will get very strange when construction of new homes, condos, hotels ceases.

this will continue it seems;

This military occupation is going to make it more and more difficult for illegal workers to work here,

wonder where they will go as u cant make a decent living in Cambodia.
PHUKET: Immigration officers at Phuket’s Rassada Pier last night arrested 37 Cambodian workers who claimed to be fleeing Thailand amid fear of a coup-related crackdown on illegal immigrants.

“We came to Thailand to work at a construction site on Koh Yao Noi for a year. After we heard about the coup and crackdown on immigrants, we decided to go back home. Now we are all getting arrested,” one of the workers told the Phuket Gazette.

An undercover officer notified police that the Cambodians were arriving on Phuket by boat at about 7:30pm yesterday.

“We arrested 27 men and 10 women when they landed at the pier,” said Phuket Immigration Superintendent Sunchai Chokhayaikij. -

Richard, Is this a populist policy being implemented by the Junta to win favour ? Who really wants this to happen ?

As you know, illegals are paid less, treated worse, and have no bargaining power.

As far as I know, US companies are not charged for hiring illegals, and the SN#s system is "purposely" screwed up as to not detect false #s.

Canada has a porous visa system that awards "so called" "training visas" to Indian and Filipino workers for Coffee, Fast food and Bank Chains. Cheaper than student's pay. Our dictator has rewarded his oligopoly supporters.

the Army is cleaning up the country from top to bottom they could care less if its popular , There doing what should have been done 6 years ago after the last coup. The way i see it is the Army wants everyone in the country here for the correct reason and legal.

I migration is just one aspect of it.

In Thailand it is quite easy to get a Migrant LA visa for undocumented workers from Laos, Cambodia, Burma and this is what many of them have, total cost is less than $200 for a 2 year visa an this also gives them the same health care package thai's get.

True they are paid less ( but still average for a common laborer is about $200/month) vs min wage is now 300 baht/day) but many are not treated bad, There is a Burmese camp 100 meters up the road from my house) Used to be they had lots of troubles but the government realizes they need them .

On another aspect, saw a show the other day on cnn about the unusual high numbers of kids crossing into the states via Mexico .seems to have dramatically risen in the past few months and thye are being allowed to travel to stay with ( if they have) families in the states rather than being returned.

Having a lot of reports of it being both legals and illegals, coming in second hand but sourced as friends and families of those being deported.

A number of them reported as being killed by the same source.

[Moving this to general chatter, this is a current and happening event that affects both Thailand and Cambodia so should be discussed here.]

On the Cambodian side of things... any thoughts on how the sudden import of a quarter of a million or more jobless Khmer who've been sending Thai money home to support their families is going to impact Cambodia? Especially on the cusp of the Phnom Penh purge of undesirables and the soon to be executed import of Australia's refugee problem?

Have not heard of ONE migrant worker killed in this latest round up and deportation and
suggest you don't start any rumors to this effect.

The Army is FULLY transparent (something that has always been lacking ) and holds daily news conferences.

if there were killing's, they could not be kept secret.

A coalition of rights groups has raised concerns over the decision by Thailand’s military junta to deport Cambodian workers en masse and demanded an investigation into claims that up to nine migrants were killed by the Thai armed forces during the campaign to repatriate them.

441,000 LEGAL worker, add another 50% illegals

fuck; add those number to Cambodians already bad work force, not counting the amount of $$ sent back an Cambodia might be headed for a light recession.

Rumours force many Cambodian workers leave for home

SA KAEO, June 13 -- Many Cambodian workers in Thailand have already left for home while more than 10,000 others are preparing to return for fear of being arrested by the Thai authorities following persisting rumours that the Thai military is preparing to launch a massive crackdown on illegal migrants.

Thai border officials said many Cambodian workers had returned home by train and bus during the past few days out of concern that the Thai military is preparing to suppress illegal migrant workers in Thailand.

The Cambodian government has provided more than 20 military trucks and over 10 buses to pick up more than 10,000 Cambodian workers now stranded at the border checkpoint in the Cambodian border town of Poi Pet, opposite Aranyaprathet district.

Pol Lt Col Benjapol Rodsawat, deputy chief of Sa Kaeo immigration police, said local Thai officials had tried to explain to Cambodian workers that they should not be afraid if they work in Thailand legally, saying that the key border checkpoint in Aranyaprathet would never be closed.

Pravit Khiengpol, director-general of Thai Labour Ministry’s Employment Department, said that a number of Thai enterprises would suffer a shortage of workers following the returning home of the Cambodian workers.

Official statistics show that a total of 441,569 Cambodian workers have registered with the Employment Department.
