No, I was thinking they were just reusing the needle kit for the IVs... combine it with him treating pregnant women and thus infecting them and their unborn kid, couples infecting each other, etc.
The "intentional" charge also makes one wonder if he was seeing a business opportunity. Make them sick with HIV, then lots of repeat business in treating them.

The Cambodian judiciary isn't known for its precise legal reasoning but I think a case for intentional murder (I.e. premeditation) is going to be difficult to make if it wasn't his intention to kill/infect but merely to save money, or was just sloppy and uncaring. I think either there is something more going on here they hasn't yet made the papers (he really was intentionally trying to infect people as OD suggests), or they are overreaching themselves in the charge (perhaps counting on the lack of legal precision here), or perhaps this isn't being reported correctly.

Hopefully they could prove he should have known that it would cause patients to get infected with HIV, a deadly virus.
Kind of like if you shot someone in the chest and say you were only trying to wound them you could be charged with attempted murder because you should have known that shooting someone in the chest could likely kill them.
I agree it's far from a closed case though. Proving "intent" might be difficult. Hopefully he admits it.
I think the hardest part about proving intent will be showing that he knew people he stuck with the needles first were HIV positive. If he didn't know they were HIV positive, how can they show he was trying to spread it?
I think more evidence will come out. 140+ people is very high, so I'm guessing they will discover that he was using methods that show he was doing more than just reusing dirty needles.

You can reuse needles if you have to. You can disinfect 'em with water & bleach or hydrogen peroxide & you can sharpen 'em. It just takes a minute. The HIV virus isn't particularly robust. The fucker couldn't be bothered or this was intentional.

I also think it's odd he admitted to reusing needles so quickly.
Makes me think he was up to something more sinister and was quick to fess up to a smaller crime of just being careless.

I'd be interested in hearing from an expert if it is statistically possible to infect such a large percentage of the local population, given the details of his 'admitted' practices.
I'd also be interested in the results of a proper medical investigation into the infections themselves. If he really was using unsterilized needles willynilly, passing around every bodies diseases to one another, then there should be multiple infections, not just HIV, and not just one strain of HIV. There should be, at the very least, various types of Hepatitis infections too. And the HIV would likely be from more than one strain. If it's only HIV, all from one strain, that would strongly indicate a single source, and as he's apparently been infecting people over an extended period of time, that would be very suspicious.

Best point on the matter made so far.LTO wrote:

That would really be revealing in the case, as HIV is comparably one of the hardest infections to be transferred by blood, other diseases would be much more rampant.

Re: Cambodian health care strikes again! (HIV Doctor Charged)
Guardian article on the trial starting today in PP. Nothing in the Cambodian English language papers ?
Unbelievable, yet I can almost believe this ...
Based on this article, it looks (to me) like a terrible case of absolute ignorance and not deliberate, but more facts may come out during the trial and of course it's up to the court to decide. An unlicensed medical practitioner who infected more than 100 villagers in north-west Cambodia with HIV by reusing unclean needles went on trial on Tuesday, facing three charges including murder, a defence lawyer said.
Cambodia, one of the poorest countries in the world, has inadequate health care facilities, especially in rural areas, where villagers often have no recourse but to depend on unlicensed medical practitioners who have trained themselves to treat minor ailments and to give injections.
Yem Chhrin, 53, was one such practitioner. Some villagers said he had a good reputation for his years of dedicated service to the village by providing treatment even though he lacked formal training or certification.
“Whether it was day or night, whether the patient had money to pay for the treatment or not, Yem Chhrin treated them regardless. I think he was a good neighbor,” said Chay Savorn, a 60-year-old woman who received treatment from him and was later found to be HIV positive.
She said she decided not to join the police complaint by 120 people against Yem Chhrin, even though four other people in her family have been infected with HIV – her daughter, her mother, a three-year-old granddaughter and a 57-year-old sibling...
It seems that he did not know about transmission of infection by needles - would be interesting to know where his medical supplies came from - maybe he picked up 3 needles from a junkie 10 years ago and has been using them ever since.General Mackevili wrote:Hopefully they could prove he should have known that it would cause patients to get infected with HIV, a deadly virus.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/o ... re-than-10Yem Chhrin’s wife, Nhoum Chenda, also urged the court to drop all charges against her husband, saying he never believed that the villagers were infected because of his actions.
“The HIV virus transmitted to those villagers must be from ... something else that we don’t know about right now,” she said by phone...
