Cambodian health care strikes again! (HIV Doctor Charged)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

LTO wrote:Interesting comments from HE on TV this evening. I didn't get it all but he seemed to be saying that there is something very strange about this situation and that more investigation is necessary before we can know what's really going on. I think he said that they are not even sure if the reported test results are accurate and experts have been sent to investigate and retest everybody. And that people need to stop speculating and spinning larger tales until the investigation is done. Further that the accused doctor is under police protection because they can't even be sure if this doctor treated/saw all the people involved, that to say that he did at this point in the investigation is just rumor mongering.
It's worst than that.... He's 99% certain that none of them are HIV positive. 80 year old people cannot get AIDS. Neither can people who don't know about the virus. So how is this possible?

Despite government-administered tests showing that more than 100 people in Battambang have been infected with HIV, Prime Minister HE said today that he was “99 per cent” sure that the results are wrong.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony this morning, the premier said he does not believe HIV infections have occurred.

“Right now, 99 per cent, I don’t believe it’s AIDS,” he said, referring to the disease which develops from HIV infection.

“They might have a virus, but it’s not AIDS . . . Can an 80-year-old person get AIDS? And can young people who do not know anything get AIDS?”

HE urged people not to jump to conclusions about the situation and instead use “all scientific possibilities” to determine what had happened.

The doctor that is accused of infecting over 100 Cambodians has been captured and arrested for questioning.

They have searched his house and collected anything related to his illegal medical clinic in Battambang.

I am not alone in this. Millions of the older Khmer generations grew tired of him also. The fucker really meant it when he said if he lost his position there will be war.

People want change. Accept it and move on.

Anyone who says this regime brings stability...is bullshit..well you are kind of right. The fucker is shrewd...he gave you the freedom if you are an NGO worker, foreigner or what not...while the take home 70% of the money...we are talking billion here.

I think Cambodia is still cursed since the 10th century...I dont even count on Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha to bring this fragile country off the ground...money blinds you. Only, if it will ever happen...the Khmers need to stand up for themselves...and I think they slowly did...but it costs lives...as proved during the protests.

the younger people i know are certainly speaking out more freely regarding their opinions of politics than they did 2 years ago.

their anger seems to have overtaken their fear.

i have even heard mid level cops voicing their opposition to the status quo.

The youth certainly do. Especially the educated ones...though most of the time they couldnt explain why they are angry...esp when asked of the historical past and causation. But they are also affected in their every day lives.
