Cambodian health care strikes again! (HIV Doctor Charged)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The HIV infection rate for a single needle stick with HIV positive blood is less than a half of one percent (0.35%-0.45%). Somewhat higher for deep injury or visibly bloody needles. But the infection rate in this village is somewhere between 15%-20%. Something is really wrong here.
Source?
The ‘less than a half of one percent’ is a fairly oft quoted number based on a number of studies.

The 15%-20% number was just a quick calculation from the local population and infection figures given in the CD article.

Now add to this fiasco the mystery of police enforcement and voila-a entirely unique Cambodian scenario. Go to:

Well according to the article, it's crystal clear that the alleged doctor Cheourm is HIV + or not and injections caused the outbreak or not.

Terrible situation but I'm really interested to see how the investigation plays out and what the facts of the case turn out to be. I would have thought a few reassuring informative general words along the lines of "it's no longer a death sentence with adequate post infection care " from the the Head of UNAIDS might have been in order rather than no comment. An ideal opportunity to spread the message given the limelight and potential stigma attributed to the villagers now. I am of course assuming that adequate treatment is available through the govt and relevant NGO set up.

Whilst I generally agree I think many of those involved in the management and education NGO's/govt might choose to play down the huge advances in treatment and that most infected folks with access to treatment will live a more or less normal life now. Telling them it's not a death sentence and not to worry would have adverse effects in increasing unprotected sex thus increasing infection rates and expense of treatment. Population would increase and the prevalence of other STD's would increase. The use of a little fear is of greater benefit to them.

^ Interesting point, I can see an angle in that and it becomes a delicate balancing act. The fear, stigma and prejudice issue is a bummer if you are in the infected bracket in a poorly educated country. I'll be shocked if this doctor was actually knowingly spreading the virus, I'd imagine it could become an international story if it isn't already.

Interesting comments from HE on TV this evening. I didn't get it all but he seemed to be saying that there is something very strange about this situation and that more investigation is necessary before we can know what's really going on. I think he said that they are not even sure if the reported test results are accurate and experts have been sent to investigate and retest everybody. And that people need to stop speculating and spinning larger tales until the investigation is done. Further that the accused doctor is under police protection because they can't even be sure if this doctor treated/saw all the people involved, that to say that he did at this point in the investigation is just rumor mongering.

“Right now, 99 per cent, I don’t believe it’s AIDS,” he said, referring to the disease which develops from HIV infection.

“They might have a virus, but it’s not AIDS . . . Can an 80-year-old person get AIDS? And can young people who do not know anything get AIDS?”
Clearly it's all wrong because those people are outside of the acceptable age bracket for HIV infection...
