Cambodian Auctions in Phnom Penh

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Here's their Facebook page, for anyone interested:

I hope he's now aware that his advertised website is wrong. :hattip:

It never looks good for a business/organization if their website is not working or non-existent.

he sent me the corrected version and asked me to post but i cant be arsed for such a bunch of cynics.

i mean= you pick it up off fb, then pick it apart and ask him to explain?
puhlease.

as he mentioned to me- thats why he dont post here or 440.

dudes just tryna make a living- hardly a scammer or incompetent.

man with an idea and a plan- friend of mine.i think you all seem pretty niggardly and unsympathetic here.

maybe a reflection of your own station in life.

kind of infuriating to me knowing the man personally.
gives me a low opinion of some posters here.

why not support a worthy man instead of attacking his grammar and typos or lack of hosting finesse.

been here a long time- got a beautiful new baby- loving wife- nice staff.

i wonder how many critics ever even tried to be in businesss.

of late, this forum is displaying a certain amount of the characteristics we all decried on the other site under former admin.
i had hoped for a better outcome here.

seemingly intelligent posters now seem to take this place as some kind of vent for their over full spleen, wake up to yourselves boys.

play nice.

stop being dick heads and support your own,
someday you may need them.
selah.

Ha! Your friend spams Facebook with a flyer that lists a website that doesn't exist, advertising an auction that offers insurance on used items, lists no names on the flyer, and we're the bad guys for being critical/skeptical?

Ha! Personally, I think you're being a bigger dickhead to your friend by not posting the correct website here for him that he passed on to you to do for him.

Would it be fair to say that the only and obvious reason you're sooooo offended here right now it's because he's your friend?

If you didn't know him, I'd bet 5 to 1 odds that you'd be just as critical.

If you had just replied nicely, this thread would look better for him. It would have been a few sceptics, followed by 2 of his decent friends vouching for him and providing the correct link.

Now it's just one of his friends ranting and raving that anyone who thinks an auction in Phnom Penh that provides insurance on used items from an auction that lists a bunk website is an asshole.

"been here a long time- got a beautiful new baby- loving wife- nice staff."

Maybe he should put that on his flyer next time.

I don't mean to say this the wrong way, only as constructive criticism.

One thing I've noticed with a lot of people recently (not just Cambodia, but other countries as well) is that people take things way too seriously "these days". I blame this largely on the internet because it's given people who normally wouldn't step into the open (like advertising a business or posting online) something to hide behind while avoiding criticism and unpleasantries to their face. This however has lead to a whole lot of hypersensitive people that get so easily offended by the simplest things (even behind their keyboards by anonymous posters), many times not even intended to be personal attacks.

Seriously though, non working domains are a big issue and instill zero confidence in anyone interested. Other things can be nitpicky, but the fact of the matter is, it gets people "riled up" enough to say something, and if we're saying something about an operation which we obviously have an interest in (see other posters on page 1), that means we're talking about things that make us wary. If it makes us arsehole commenter/posters wary, then it makes a huge mass of others wary as well. So before snide posters (if they can even be called that) are dismissed as mere annoyances, think of why they're posting what they are, especially if there are legit concerns.

Again, I don't know who's the person involved with the auction, I'm just saying that just because someone doesn't like what someone else said, doesn't make it inapplicable or wrong.

It looks the normal amateur business launch by an expat in Cambodia to me. Clip art style posters with a mis-spelt web domain that leads to a dead web-space when spelt correctly?

I'm prepared to give the benefit of the doubt. This country attracts a lot of would-be entrepreneurs who don't quite have the skills to run a business in their own countries but where their ideas and skills are slightly above average here.

I'd question the idea of an English language service for auctions here... I'd think it would do better if it was Khmer driven (there must be some wonderful antique type stuff here that isn't considered "national heritage") but fuck it, good luck to them, at least they're trying to do something new.

"Accepting goods from 1st June for Auction on 8th August"

So people will just give them their goods two months ahead and then trust that they don't take off? Sounds like the typical "let me borrow your motobike" scam to me. And no transparency for how big their cut is. We should just trust them.

I, too, will be having auctions. Give me all your stuff today and I will sell it two months from now. I'll even throw in some insurance for your stuff! Check out my website, it doesn't exist but here's the link http://bofhscamboaution.com ! How's that sound to you, Frank? I can collect large quantities of items.

It's not a bad idea, but looks a long way from reality at the moment.

Looking sat the facebook page the one thing that screams out at me is the lack of any advertising or publicity aimed at the biggest target market; the Khmer.

How many barang are going to be showing up to buy and sell at auction every month? Not many. Hire a Khmer business/advertising developement manager and get the word out.
