in cambodia journalism has become a crime
in cambodia journalism has become a crime
Editorial in today’s Washington Post.
“In Cambodia, journalism can be a crime. That is the meaning of the charges against two Cambodian journalists, Uon Chhin and Yeang Sothearin, who worked for Radio Free Asia (RFA), a private news organization that receives U.S. government funding to bring accurate news and information to people living in closed societies in Asia. The journalists are now awaiting a verdict from a Cambodian court on wholly manufactured charges of espionage and producing pornography. The charges should never have been brought and should be dropped.”
Then this cold water in the face:
“Prime Minister HE, in power since 1985, now presides over an intolerant, one-party state, despite years of effort by the international community to encourage democracy in Cambodia. In Congress, the House has taken a good step by unanimously passing the Cambodia Democracy Act. The legislation would freeze assets of and restrict visas to the United States for top Cambodian officials who are found to have “directly and substantially undermined democracy in Cambodia.” The bill ought to be taken up and approved by the Senate, as well.”

RFA always had an anti government bias, since the days when their propaganda backed the CGDK. Good riddance to them.

Unbiased journalism seems to be a crime in America.
Re: in cambodia journalism has become a crime
And there are books about it!

Agree, and all this EU nonsense about democracy fading in Cambodia is absolute twaddle. The battle lines were drawn long before even I got here some 14 years ago, and it was obvious some news outlets were pushing their luck even back then. You have to be a very shrewd operator to report the news here and present the (non-pro gov.) facts and not upset the government, it is a very delicate balance. I think probably the SEA Globe is perhaps the only publication that has managed this well in my time here.John Bingham wrote: ↑Sun Aug 25, 2019 8:15 am RFA always had an anti government bias, since the days when their propaganda backed the CGDK. Frankly a news site/paper that reports business, sport, entertainment and just leaves the politics at the door would be a welcome relief. Everyone is trying to fill the void left by CD or PPP v1.0, they shouldn't bother, the result will eventually be the same.

I'm not a journalist, but work in a pretty big news room, always wonder if my work location is going to get me awkward attention when crossing in asia.

Agreed, but I see it as a win-win. The freezing of some top brass's assets overseas can only be good as well, regardless of whether or not the country gets pushed further into the clutches of China.John Bingham wrote:RFA always had an anti government bias, since the days when their propaganda backed the CGDK. Re: in cambodia journalism has become a crime
Asking the current government questions that should be asked is a crime here, to hell with RFA and who supports them.
HE gives a speech that Chinese workers must be imported because our workers know nothing. Well, a good follow up question would be say....you have been in complete charge for decades, why have all your education initiatives failed to address this disparity in skilled labor after all these years? What plan do you have in place to address this? Never dared asked. This is just one of many questions that could be asked but never is. Who cares who funds it, the question is legitimate, especially to Cambodians now being displaced by floods of Chinese workers.
