Re: Is Cambodia Getting Better or Worse?
@OP. I'm not sure that you can disassociate Cambodia from the rest of the world in this question of getting better or worse . Cambodia has it's own issues which don't seem to be getting much better - the ones you mentioned and a few others - agree.
However, I've been traveling in western countries a bit this past year and it seems to me that the overall feeling is that things are getting worse. That doesn't mean to say that it's true. But there does seem to be a sort of general worry about the future - the planet, the world economy, not enough jobs, wars and religious strife - there's plenty to worry about.
All this also affects Cambodia - no country is isolated from world problems. But while on the one hand, Cambodia probably has more resources than a lot of other countries, on the other hand, too many of these resources are being squandered by the elite and not being used to generate solid longterm improvement for all the population.
Yet, when you look at specific cases, meaning real people and their lives in Cambodia, I think that things are improving - just not as fast as they should be. A lot of young people have a better life than their parents - not talking about the KR times of course - but a lot of rice farmers' children (that I know personally) are now working in tourism, banks and engineering or running their own businesses. It's not as good as it could be or should be, but things are not "worse" for the young generation than for their parents. And kids nowadays expect more - and so they should.
So, yes things are getting worse, however, they are also getting better. (But too damn slowly IMO.)
And all pineapples are not the same price - size, condition, sweetness and juiciness count. And the marketing technique of the pineapple seller can also have an effect on the price.

Re: Is Cambodia Getting Better or Worse?
HUH???The price of issuing passport is still almost the same.
BS;
when we got my gf her first passport it was $185 and took 2 months and only good for 3 years
now $115 2 weeks and good for 10 years!! I would say that's a marked improvement!!
You Got to cut down trees for $$ and also as the population rises more land is needed for growing food otherwise ur importing
look at the elections over the past 15 years or so,
not the results BUT
the amount of young people getting involved. ( yes i know many were paid) but still they were introduced to the system where as before they just voted cause the outcome was known.
Look at the garment demonstrations for higher pay.
Look at the developments across the tonle sap from PP. when i lived over there there was very little, now
Cambodia still has serious problems with corruption and the goverment and things might seem to cost more but the general population is far better off now than before. Juts look at the increase of motorcyles in the country
The land grabs go on, but that is a throw back to the KR era when all land docs were destroyed and so many squatted on property foolishly believing that gave them "rights"
Changes are coming,
i would bet HE is worried

Worse. But I think gentrification is a bad thing. And I feel that too many westerners/NGOs/missionaries/etc. are changing this country to fit their idea of "better". I came and stayed because I liked the way it was.

More and more cute houses for deserving state servants. Now surely that's a good thing?

Re: Is Cambodia Getting Better or Worse?
Whether or not Cambodia is getting better or worse is a subjective question. Everyone will have their own opinion. When I first came here, Cambodia was a place where a guy like myself could come to find adventure and maybe fortune. Now, Cambodia is turning into a place that college girls think is cute. I'm not sure how I feel about the changes here.

Really? The farmers' children that I know personally from my village are either working in Thailand with their parents, or working in local brickyards or else 'kicking the wind"(unemployed)

As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Re: Is Cambodia Getting Better or Worse?
i dont want Cambodia to change, i dont want it to turn into another thailand, i enjoy the more stripped back affair they have here, there is a lot of things internally that need to change.. government/police/corruption.. but i dont want the place to lose its charm like thailand has..
