Re: Is Cambodia becoming like 'land of Smiles?
Look it's one thing if you're just the nice foreigner who lives there, but as soon as you take on responsibilities and stop being a walking ATM, life is a constant fight in Cambodia, much like elsewhere. My point was the people are not any different or nicer than other nations. They're individuals, some of them are nice while others are utter c*nts. I think the distribution of personalities is pretty similar across humanity, that was my point. The people who keep believing the khmers are so nice and polite do so because they live in a bubble, not real khmer life. Besides one incident I didn't have any particularly bad experiences, so you missed my point. I also have similar bad experiences in Europe where I come from. I have great relationships in Cambodia, and earning respect and love are just like anywhere else in the world, it takes time and being who you are and not just a walking ATM. I feel sorry for all the barangs who don't understand this and think their khmer prostitute gf loves them after two weeks, and they end up being ripped off or worse.doktor_d wrote: ↑Fri May 25, 2018 5:06 pm"Countless hours in real Khmer neighborhoods"superferret wrote: ↑Fri May 25, 2018 4:40 pm No, I don't live in a bubble, my khmer friends come from the lowest classes, so granted I don't have rich khmer friends, I've spent countless hours in real khmer neighborhoods,
the kind you probably wouldn't last 30 minutes, but who knows. But whatever keep believing they're all nice polite people, after one of them tried to kill me, I kind of lost that assumption.
Btw before you start coming up with theories, the reason she tried to kill me was romantic.
I've rented 4 different apartments the last 10 years.. all in "working class" Khmer neighborhoods. Never saw a barang in any of the neighborhoods those apartments were located in.. and would you believe it - I actually lasted more than 30 minutes!! I'm still alive and well.
But who am I kidding? That doesn't mean anything.. It's not like anyone has ever kept it realer in Cambodia than you right? Nobody knows Cambodia and Cambodians better than you I'm sure.
Or maybe.. just maybe.. Kayve's quote above is a more likely explanation for why you seem to keep having bad experiences with people whereever you go?

for every good Khmer, thai, American , Swiss..... there is a bad one
what i have seen as far as Asians go, is the ones that are furthest away, ( least contaminated) , from the tourist, seem to be the nicer ones
( ones who smiles light up the room for no other reason than they just love to smile)
