Bubbles the Monkey - Bar Siem Reap
Bubbles the Monkey - Bar Siem Reap
Just saw a video posted on the SR Expats FB group, the owner of a Bar in SR has a young monkey as a pet, in the video it shows the monkey drinking from a glass of which the owner says is a cocktail. If he is giving the monkey alcohol, then he needs a crack upside the head, and should be reported, but to me it doesn't look like an alcoholic drink, and maybe he was just trying to be funny, or act cool to his friends, which ain't cool!
From reading the bar owners profile, it appears that he actually rescued the monkey from someone who kept it chained up, and he plans to release it back into the wild. If that's the case then I applaud him for his effort in rescuing the animal, however instead of keeping it as a pet, he really should hand it over to an experienced organisation that deals in rescuing animals and integrating them back into the wild (if there is one?).
This is not a 'witch hunt' on my behalf, nor am I a devote crusader of animals rights, but I was hoping maybe someone could point me in the right direction of an organisation that could assist in rescuing/taking over the care of this monkey and hopefully re-integrate it back into the wild, so that I can pass the information along to said bar-owner.

A bar is not a good environment for a monkey.

The guy is a complete douche. He only started talking about releasing the Macaque when the shit storm hit. He initially used the Macaque to draw people to his new bar, Fail!!!!
I did contact a couple of animal rescue organizations but they are totally swamped with Macaques that some dickheads like this guy thought would make good pets. Until they got bitten, that is.

Thanks for clarifying that Hanno, I thought that maybe he was just a naive idiot and that I would give him some friendly advice, obviously not the case then. I see he's getting a beasting now on FB, so I'll let the residents of SR deal with it.

There is a real good reason why the locals don't traditionally keep monkeys as pet. In term of releasing it, pretty simple if he is genuine; simply release him/her at the vicinity of Angkor Wat he will get a long just fine with 100s of others free-daily-bananas-feeding from tourists eating monkeys.
EVERYONE BOW DOWN AND PAY EXTREME HOMAGE TO HIS MAJESTIES flying chicken©

I've been asked never to come back to certain places (villages) in SEA as I've released abused monkeys from chains, one time having to contend with a growing unruly group of locals. Animal abuse is by far the most difficult aspect of living out here for me and it's a constant battle not to "go large" on individuals who mistreat these animals.
