Later in the article it says:
He picked up the knife at a park and brought it along for self defense, Ablett said.

A Ho Chi Minh City court on Wednesday sentenced a British man to five years in jail for robbing VND2.6 million ($111) from a convenience store earlier this year.
John David Ablett, 44, visited a store on Nguyen Trai Street in the city’s District 1 at midnight on February 9, and saw a lone woman employee, Luong My Linh, 25, on duty. He brandished a knife and stole the money from the cash register.
When he left the store, Linh called the police, who chased after him and apprehended him within 100 meters from the store.
He told the court he had been drunk and gone to the convenience store to buy some beer, but came up with the idea of robbery when he saw there was only one woman employee.
"I was unemployed for several months and had no money."

In fact having looked back on this I do remember this guy from several years ago, he was on riverside homeless and always causing problems in 2016 with a big rotting foot, I recall a few run ins with him asking for money and use of my phone. seems he was deported to England and somehow came back to SEA to go and hold up a Vietnamese store. glad he likes SEA, he's 5 years in Vietnam now.

That's a surprisingly sensible sentence.

when did Vietnam police change the color of their uniform? Used to be different shades of green for standard and tourist police and flesh color for traffic police.

Re: Brit arrested after robbing Saigon convenience store
I'm pleased he did it in Vietnam, because if he had done in the UK, he would have just got a slap on the wrist & told not to do it again
Hopefully he serves the entire sentence for his crime
The lady in the shop must have been completely terrified by what happened that night

Re: Brit arrested after robbing Saigon convenience store
This was posted about the same guy 5 years ago! (August 2015). He was already bloody, begging, and living on the streets in Phnom Penh. Rock bottom. It's amazing that he is still alive.
newsworthy/unconscious-elt-teacher-with ... tml#p90704This morning, a British man walked up to me in a drunk manner that I almost walked away, and asked me that "You Speak English?" Then he asked for 1,000R or 2,000R to buy something to eat. He has nothing now because he was in trouble, there’s a man mistreated him (his body is bloody). Please note that: “He used to be an English teacher at ELT, but today he lives and sleeps along riverside waiting for his relatives to take him away. I gave some money to him, which much more than what he asked for, which could be enough for today, but tomorrow and the days after I hope that there will be other kind people help him as little as they can.
He is a gangster, a bad man or what I don’t care, however, I do know that his hungry stomach is calling for food, and he tears in front of me, I cannot ignore. Therefore, I hope that people may not die from hunger (I understood this feeling).
At last, when he saw the money which is much more than what he asked for, then he expressed his thanks and asked for my name. It’s just in case in any day he will pay me back (He said I'll pay you for beer or sth), I said I do not need you to pay it back but I wish your mum or your relatives will soon come to take you away.
So this posting, I want any friend of mine who know him then can contact his family or the British Embassy or any possible ways.
His name's: John David Ablett and His mothe name's: Kathrine.
Please help the people who are in difficult situations, do not discriminate any races, or what kind of those are, because our help (even little) but it’s from our pure heart. Thank you! — with Toum Jacky Chan and Bunthoeun Yem.

Salmon uniforms are traffic police, been around for a decade or so. Green is the public security police. Black is the mobile security force.
