The real question is what are you going to do with it? Go deep sea fishing and sell seafood at the market? Do you not have any idea of how dangerous it is to fish like that? And how many pirates are out there? You should read up on this subject.

And this one! A few Khmer friends DIY in the sticks.

I had a wooden boat built in Koh Kong last year, length about 16m. Longtail, 3 cyl diesel engine 29hp. It is the common open type of fishing boat, with a roof. Draft about 0.3m which allows you to enter mangroves or go near the shore without getting stuck too often.

I am using the boat, weather permitting, to make trips down the coast to Koh Rong, sometimes to Koh Tang and the Islands off Kep towards the Vietnamese border. Also to travel up the numerous rivers and backwaters along the Cambodian coast.

Building the boat cost 6500$. Another 4000-5000$ was spent on fitting out, including the engines. A local captain is hired at 15$/day. Diesel consumption 5l/h, travelling speed 10-14 kmh. The yearly maintenance was done recently and cost something like 300$. Mooring is free for me because I live in a house nearby, but there ist some danger that unsecured moveables disappear.

A lot of those boars are built in Koh Kong. Srey Ambal used to have a huge shipyard of these being built. I think they'd be really expensive now that lumber prices have skyrocketed. Last time I was there a few weeks ago they still had a few boats being built, but not as many as before. Running out of wood I imagine.

As someone who knows nada about boats,this is an excellent thread......thanx to you guys for the good info....keep up the good work...I;d like to know how much to hire (approx) a boat for a week to sail down to ko kong ...is it possible?
