Boat festival in "Shitsville"

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I'm not keen on beach resorts of any description but not only does Sihanoukville attract rather more than its fair share of sexpats - it would appear that it attracts far more deathpats than the resorts of Thailand (though you're probably less likely to be defenestrated by a Russian in Snookie but only because they're more likely to stab or shoot you there).

Cambodia is a wonderful country and the people are genuinely wonderful but there's no arguing that Thailand is far more developed and health services, availability of goods, etc. are light years ahead of Cambodia. It takes a certain kind of expat to prefer Cambodia to Thailand and there aren't that many of them. Most people, if they can handle the visas, are going to opt for Thailand because the things that make life easier are more plentiful in Thailand than they are in Cambodia. This is doubly true for those getting on in years.

Red OPs, you (once again) couldn't be more wrong.
1/ I get NO income support from the Australian govt. whatsoever
2/ I actually work 8 hrs a day, 6 days a week here. Not because I need to, because I want to.
3/ I rarely, except on my one day a week off, Have a drink before 6pm.
4/ The visa issue had nothing at all to do with my choice to make Cambodia my home. It is a nice fringe benefit though.
5/ You say you don't care about my life choices, yet you keep trying to explain to me and others why we chose this life. You really are a judgemental prick aren't you.

Richard, yes, its already been well established that I have a problem with your constant negative comments about Sihanoukville,on every social media forum you belong to. I will continue to call you out whenever I read your utter bullshit. So maybe you should reconsider hitting that "Submit" button sometimes

You're the one throwing out all the swear words, potty mouth. Like I said, many, many times, live where you want, I don't care.

It's just quite bizarre how you get so irate when people even remotely criticise a town you have chosen to stay in for a few years, and prepared to fight about it. If you are in the lucky 10% or so, then fair play, why get so upset?

What are your feeling on marmite/vegemite, dare I ask?......

Having traveled to and in Thailand for 35 years I was going to retire on Ko Samui where I started out 35 years ago, but I found Sihanoukville. I can afford to live just about anywhere I want, but like Southeast Asia. To me and with 35 years in Thailand, I loved Thailand years ago, but now other than the non touristy side of Ko Samui, I can't stand Thailand. I find Cambodia very much like Thailand 35 years ago. I live in a compound across the street from a beach used mainly by Cambodians and find it to be paradise. There are parts of Snookyville that I don't care for, but most of PP (and Bangkok) I can't stand.

As a good friend of mine in Alaska said years ago: "If we were all the same, we would be in the same valley on top of the same woman" Kind of says it all.

I have been staying in Thailand up to 3 months every year for the last 9. Was good, friendly and cheap when I first got there and I believe, a few years before much better. I still enjoy it (mostly in Issan) and can speak a little of the language, but I've seen it change since then, the LOS has something else behind the smiles in some places for sure. Show respect, even though there is no easy translation for that word and you mostly get the same in return, same as in Cambodia. But the general policy that most expats feel or beginning to feel is that we are not wanted there!. They only seem to want 2 week tourists in places like Phuket and Samui with big cash to spend. Retirees on big pension or incomes have few worries, but under 50 yr olds with no spouse or family, no matter how much money find it a challenge to be able to stay! If that were different, I felt welcome and same rules as here to stay I would be there now!

i dont really get the SHV and the Sexpats thing, theres about 6 bars up victory hill with a handful of girls, and a fair few down by the square, all of which are always dead most of the nights, i think you get more sexpats/tourists down 104 alone than you get in the whole of SHV easy... and once youve been round the block once then thats it, SHV doesnt recycle its girls very often...
it might have had a reputation 5-10 years ago, but the place is like a ghost town in comparison these days seriously

They could always move the chicken farm to the old Government building on Ochheuteal beach. (Right next to the revamped Chivas). :thumb:

No, I hear they going to change that place into a tourist attraction. It's surrounded by the expanded port now. A working museum, same as the Black Country Museum in UK. Charge the Chinese and Koreans entrance fee, £100 inc sampling the service. ;)

Ok Richard. Here's a quick comprehension up date. Red OPs said of me " Woah their Nelly, I sense some anger, living by the sea is supposed to be calming.... Judging from that response I can imagine you as a 'typical' denizen of Kampong Som, living off his 'bad back' dole check, knocking back cheap piss in the morning and having intellectual discussions with his own fingers by lunchtime..
That constitutes a personal attack in anyone's books. It was in response to my reply about his previous comment, where he actually told us all the reasons we chose Cambodia to live over somewhere else. And I stick by my comment that he is a wanker of the first degree , with absolutely NO knowledge to back the PERSONAL comment he made.
I responded by calling him A judgmental prick.
I believe that was a fair call to his PERSONAL ATTACK on me and the other posters he lumped in his comment.
Also, it more then obvious that he is a troll/sockpuppet from TOF.
My so called personal comment to you was to tell you that I'm sick of your negative comments on EVERY FUKN FORUM you are a member of, about a town that you don't like, doesn't suit you AND you are most obviously not man enough to live in. Is that personal enough for ya sunshine?
