If you followed the SHV bashing for long, you would have realised that most locals acknowledge it is a "shithole that suits them". What this discussion and the original one on kh440 are about, is some "pig penh" expats relentless bashing on SHV like they are blind about their own surroundings.Red Ops wrote:Again, we are all products of our own creation, along with being victims of circumstamce, and everything is hypothetical; i'm skint and live where i do due to countless paths taken along the way.
Maybe i would be a rich bloke 'going ghetto' or see an untapped resource in kampong som. Perhaps i'd be happy in costa rica, or slum with euro trash in majorca, or monaco, maybe jamaica... who knows?
My main point being, why defemd somethimg which doesnt even remotely 'belong' to you, ypu have no 'right' to and have no real 'control' over. Easier to say "yeah, its a shithole, but suits me, fpr now" than get rabidly defensive/offensive.
"Live how you want to love, and love who you please" (chumbawamba).
Only goldilocks found something just right, away from her house, and then got fucked up by the bears what lived there first
Probably a lesson there.

Interesting to hear everyone's perceptions and experiences of Pattaya, it's been my base and home for the last 16 years while working overseas after finding it on a year's backpacking trip. Like most of my friends the work hard/play hard rotation when we first arrived gradually wore off and we've all settled into a more regular liveable lifestyle. The nightlife scene is an illusion and if you can't see beyond that or have interests other than that I don't think it's a recipe for a happy future as a long term resident. The quality and ease of life you can enjoy Is hard to beat if you can learn to manage the negatives, which are minor and not much different to anywhere else in the region to be honest. I think visitors see the tourist aspect of Pattaya and don't appreciate residing here is a different ball game.

Snooky IS shit, phnom penh IS shit... get over it.
No, but for the reason phucketrichard stated, it beats the ass of a grubby port town in cambodia.
Again, horsrs for courses, all on your tastes and budget. Don't tell me you 'could afford to live anywhere, but chose kampong som because its such a great place'. You couldn't afford the costs and/or hassle of hia hin/pattaya/bali/wherever. Just like myself, vlad, hotdigr and everyone else on this thread, save PR.
No shame in it, like buying stuff in lidl...
Cambodia: the happyshopper of asia.
I broke my back in 2009.,Being a surfer since I was 10 I always thought my home would be Medawi in Indo.
I couldn't stand living on the beach and watching people surf when I couldn't.
So Sihanoukville is perfect for me. I'm on the beach and no one is surfing.
So basically - fuk off you wanker that knowns ABSOLUTELY nothing about why Sihanoukville was my choice to live in.
Dipshitwanker trying to explain to people my life choices.
I don't try to explain why you live your pathetic little life to anyone else, because I neither know, nor give a shit about it.
FUK RIGHT OFF TO TOF ARSEHOLE

Woah their Nelly, I sense some anger, living by the sea is supposed to be calming.... Judging from that response I can imagine you as a 'typical' denizen of Kampong Som, living off his 'bad back' dole check, knocking back cheap piss in the morning and having intellectual discussions with his own fingers by lunchtime.
I care not for your life, lifestyle or choices..... I care not for either town, and have mixed feelings about Cambodia, and SEA as a whole, but you gotta admit the visa thing was a big reason..... imagine the hassles of border runs with an injured spine.

Better medical, food, accommodation, electricity, other infrastructure, entertainment, traffic, cleaner, more work opportunities, in fact, almost everything.
Having said that, being better than PP is kind of a meaningless recommendation.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
