Boat festival in "Shitsville"

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. How can someone under retirement age that doesn't want to work get a long term visa for Thailand Richard?
Do u have $$$ and a way to prove it? there is a new visa called the METV valid for a multiple entry stay of 2 months/within 6 months but it needs to be applied for in ur own country.
check out thai visa thread, http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/870 ... opic-metv/

otherwise
go to school ( it does not have to only be for learning thai but could be cooking, muay thai, massage, etc)
get married
have a kid
do single entry tourist visas every 3 months
live under the radar without a visa and when ur ready to leave pay them 20,000 baht and go an come back the next day
:beer3:

as to hua hin, i go thru there often, would choose pattaya over that place any day
seems that metv doesn't have financial requirements for Australians. Pity it's only good for 60 days at a time.

well its like this
you get it,
after the first 60 days u apply for a extension of 30 days IN THAILAND 1,900 baht
u than go to any border ---leave and come back ( right away or after a day or ....)
repeat 2 times, leave right before the visa expires an retuning before it expires an get another 3 months
so almost 9 months with 2 border runs

u also need get the visa in Australia so every time the visa has expired u head back home

Not that i'd swap my current situation with any of the above.....but if i had decent money in the bank, and ways of making more, i wouldn't be living in pp oe shk. Maybe not in thailand, either, but, alas, one thing unites 90% of us cambodian expats.... cheap visas, oh and work opportunities.

No, but for the reason phucketrichard stated, it beats the ass of a grubby port town in cambodia.

Again, horsrs for courses, all on your tastes and budget. Don't tell me you 'could afford to live anywhere, but chose kampong som because its such a great place'. You couldn't afford the costs and/or hassle of hia hin/pattaya/bali/wherever. Just like myself, vlad, hotdigr and everyone else on this thread, save PR.

No shame in it, like buying stuff in lidl...

I know a couple of people that could afford to live anywhere on earth and choose sihanoukville. I don't get it as I absolutely hated the place but for some its home. Everybody has a right to choose.

I like the self awareness you display and the arguments you use do make sense.
I live in SHV and have been an average of 10 days twice a year to Pattaya in the past 10 years, renting nice flats, usually in jomtien.
Concerning Thailand, don't forget that living in pattaya or whatever touristic place over there would means interacting with Thais on a daily basis. Seing how I start to get into conflicting situations with them after 10 days, I just can't see how I could manage it years after years...

I would be however interested to know what worldwide seaside resorts you would consider perfect for living if money wasn't an issue ?
I do personally think that rich people places have only one major problem : too many rich people concentration.. and as a group rich people are even less pleasant than Thais..

Again, we are all products of our own creation, along with being victims of circumstamce, and everything is hypothetical; i'm skint and live where i do due to countless paths taken along the way.

Maybe i would be a rich bloke 'going ghetto' or see an untapped resource in kampong som. Perhaps i'd be happy in costa rica, or slum with euro trash in majorca, or monaco, maybe jamaica... who knows?

My main point being, why defemd somethimg which doesnt even remotely 'belong' to you, ypu have no 'right' to and have no real 'control' over. Easier to say "yeah, its a shithole, but suits me, fpr now" than get rabidly defensive/offensive.

"Live how you want to love, and love who you please" (chumbawamba).

Only goldilocks found something just right, away from her house, and then got fucked up by the bears what lived there first

Probably a lesson there.
