Bent Out of Shape

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Bent Out of Shape

Post by Ravensnest »

What types of jobs are available here to foreigners besides teaching that pay well?

I have an excellent CV. Skills ranging from management, IT, sales, and Teaching. I'm currently a licensed (in the US) CnP insurance agent (useless here). Never arrested, etc.

My frustration:
Last month, on our actual payday, my school announced we were not getting paid our normal salary. Only 50% and you are not getting paid today. It will be in 3 days.

Today again is our payday, they announce we are not getting 50%. It's only 40% of our Salary. Oh- and you will get it tomorrow. No apology, no explanation, nothing. The pay period closed almost 2 weeks ago and yet they gave no advanced notification or anything. Meanwhile, I'm teaching double the students I would be teaching on campus. My school must be saving at least a 75% reduction of a normally outrageous electric bill due to employees working from home. Unnecessary Staff is not working which is also a huge saving to the owners. Lots of teachers have chosen unpaid leave instead of teaching online. I pried out of my boss today that we will not be working September nor October and if we are lucky, maybe re-open in November.

I can fly back home, that's not a problem. But I'd be leaving behind my better half, which I refuse to do. I know others are worse off. If you are reading this and you were let go, I am sorry. I realize I am lucky to have some sort of a paycheck and I needed to vent somehow. Below is the root of my post.

I had not planned on moving here and working. After being here for a few months, I thought I'd take a job and have fun teaching these great kids English for a school year. My Circumstances have certainly changed from 2 years ago.
Still here, in country...

Many folks are teaching online:

There is also proofreading and editing work if you have a good grasp of using MS Word. Check with translation companies in the region by e-mail. They need native speakers to check and correct the translations.

Jesus, that's grim.........what is he basing that on?

HE's coming out with a book bragging about his response and lack of infections here.........yet no one will have the balls to make the call to open up the schools.

The education ministers are so afraid of losing face by having some ankle biter come down with the virus if they open the schools, that they would rather die than make a tough choice and risk losing face.

China is already like 95% as far as schools reopening. What the fuck is Cambodia waiting on exactly?

At least China has solidarity amongst the communist party, and they can kind of feel supported in decision making.

Here, ministers are waiting on HE to give the go ahead on everything. They are not given freedom of leadership because if anything blows back, HE will throw them under the bus.

A very diverse mix of jobs available here that don't involve teaching. Thankfully.

Don't pigeonhole yourself to what you have experience in: many Khmer in middle management have degrees, diplomas and certificates out their assholes but are lacking in soft and hard skill.

Contact a recruiter and see what they can bring you.

Wow. Disappear from that place as soon as you get paid. Not being able to pay full wages due to income loss, and talking to employees about it, is understandable. This sketchy bullshit they're pulling is clearly intentional. How many times are they gonna fuck you over? Will you even get paid next month? 25% of your salary? The way they've acted is unacceptable and you should get out as Soon as you can. Get your pay, send them an email the next business day explaining why you won't be working for them, effective immediately.
Do you think the parents of baby boomers whined so much when the boomers started changing society? And yet the whiney ones like to call young people "snowflakes." Hmm...

If you are asking about my boss basing that on- reported my multiple newspapers:
"Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister HE requesting a delay of school reopening across the Kingdom until November, when the new academic year begins."

Thank you, I've never used one in my life and didn't realize they had them here.

I work for a major private school here too.

Same. I wish I had known about this possibility a couple months ago...

I've had the good experience of submitting a cv to companies that I looked at, but who were not advertising anything for myself, being called to interview and having a role created for me.

Google, glassdoor and a number of agencies in PP should be starting points.
