Barang victim complex

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Barang victim complex

Post by Jacket »

"They only pulled me over because I'm a foreigner!"
Yes, that was the only reason. Not that you were riding a moto without a tax sticker down the wrong way on a one-way lane whilst neither wearing a helmet, nor having a driver's licence.

Let's be real here for a second. The Khmer have a tendency to be kinda racist. That's a given. But there are these people who propose, that anything bad that happens to any white foreigner in this country ever is caused by the Khmer's racism against white folk.
It's not like the dude who tried to overcharge you for a pair of trousers isn't trying to overcharge EVERYBODY on his trousers. That's his job for fuck's sake! The guy buys as low as possible and sells as high as possible, he's a merchant god damnit, what do you expect? When you're in Cambodia, you'll be ripped off, or stolen from, or maybe even abused, but it doesn't happen to you because you're a barang, it happens to you because you're in Cambodia and that is what happened to a houndred other people in this country aswell that day and trust me, not all of them are white foreigners. So you've chosen to live in a third world country and something bad happened to you? Best just to ignore the 14 million Cambodians who have to deal with this nonsense whether they want to or not and make it all about yourself, the "poor" foreigner who can just leave the country and go home whenever he likes.

And while I'm at it, let's do away with the whole notion of "barang prices". Because people who keep banging on about "barang prices" never talk about "barang salaries" or barang "I'm getting long term unemployment benefit from my government and spend it in Cambodia even though I'm not supposed to" money. We make 5 to 10 times what a cambodian makes a month (on an average) and we complain that they might want to charge us a thousand Riel more on a kilo of potatoes than some girl that's making bugger all from working at the factory for a month. For real? Give me a fucking break. Some foreigner's here are just crybabies.

that is true. usually my wife does the shopping for me. not because I don't know how to barter, I just don't feel like having to do it five or six times for every major visit at the market. still though, with rare exceptions, when I come home from the market with some groceries 8 times out of 10 when I tell her how much it was, she'll be like "that sounds about right"

100% with you on this jacket, a good Khmer friend with one's interest at heart is quite an advantage.

Personally, we're not getting a cent from anybody, and we're paying the wages of three Khmer from our own savings - and barang prices vs. local prices shit me.

Not me. I enjoy paying more than others. It makes me feel morally superior. :thumb:
