Re: Barang hipster marries his Khmer boyfriend...

All was not rose for the newly weds. The authorities did not agree to the wedding, but the family went ahead with it anyway. Noon until 9pm is a strange hour for a wedding. And of course, the fake beard must have been disconcerting.

Kratie: On 3 February a French man named Frank married his 23 year old Khmer boyfriend, in Sangkat Rokar Kandal, Kratie city.

It's seems a really weird traditional wedding for people in Kratie, due to the French groom wears the fake beard, they make a time for the wedding party to start from noon to 9 pm, and what's more it's a marriage with man and man.
The Rokar Kandal authority considers that the wedding is an illegal marriage, so the Khmer groom's family were rejected the marriage permission from authority, they requested just a small party, however they still turned it into a wedding party.

According to Lieutenant General Prom Phaneth, the immigration police came to prevent the wedding process because the Khmer groom's parents have to get the marriage agreement with the authority . The authority said it's an illegal wedding because there is no marriage law between man and man in Cambodia yet especially foreigner.

Curious they single one out as the groom, as both in this case would qualify. Stereotypically the one with the beard would normally hold this role?

In this article, they refer to a French groom and a Khmer groom. The Khmer groom's family held the party.

It's in the Khmer Times.
Police prevent same-sex wedding ceremony
Buth Reaksmey Kongkea / Khmer Times

A wedding between a 36-year-old Frenchman and a 23-year-old Cambodian man was prohibited on Saturday evening by provincial immigration police in Kratie province’s Kratie town.

Nuth Sokheng, Kratie town deputy police chief, said the wedding was stopped because there was no law on marriage between two men in Cambodia, making it illegal.
“The reason why our local authority has decided to stop their marriage is because it was an illegal marriage,” he said. “They did not inform or write to our authority for authorisation but celebrated it, illegally.”

“Also, in Cambodia, we do not have a law which authorises two men to get married, especially a foreign man and a Cambodian like this,” he added. “This is the first time that a foreign man and a Cambodian man have tried to get married in Cambodia.”

Mr Sokheng identified the men as Frank Novak, a French national, and Loeuk Chanrattanan, from Kratie province.

Deputy provincial police chief Brigadier General Prumh Phaneth said local authorities were right to ban the wedding due to a lack of laws to recognize unions between two men.
He added that police have summoned both men to appear for questioning and education by provincial police.

It's not. I know a number of male forigeners who have had wedding parties with Khmer grooms in the past years.

Good question. Just getting past the gay thing for argument's sake, let's imagine it was a man and woman getting married. In Kratie province, which is still very rural and traditional and many areas are surprisingly remote. So this dude turns up in a false beard and sunglasses to get married? Anywhere in the fucking world that would get alarm bells ringing and the police would soon get involved. And you can't even think about doing any public ceremony here without getting local approval first, so either these guys are having a laugh or they are just idiots.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
