Barang Beggar on the Streets of Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Everyone looks like that on their days off, right?
"Life is too important to take seriously."

"Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."

He wants to know what Americans consider the reasons for our large homeless population. Is it that they chose this lifestyle or is it a failure of the state to provide resources?

I certainly looked like that on Sunday after Saturday night in Bangkok. How I was allowed on the plane back to Phnom Penh I will never know.

Situation in Australia

From the 2008 report "Which way home? - each night, 100,000 Australians are homeless. Half are under 24 years-old, and 10,000 are children.

For most, Christmas is a happy time. A time to relax and spend time with family. But for the homeless, Christmas can be the hardest time of the year. This year (2011)Australia’s homeless shelters are packed to the rafters and unable to meet current demand. The situation is so bad that couples with children are most likely to be turned away. https://radioadelaidebreakfast.wordpres ... /homeless/

There is a lot on this topic on the web (Wikipedia) and elsewhere if anyone wants to read. In the USA, There are about 650,000 homeless (out of a population of around 300 million) at any given point in time over a year. However the number of people becoming homeless for some period of time over the course of a year is many times that (some say as high as 3.5 million including 1.5 million Children.)

About 10% to 15% of homeless are war veterans. The USA government makes a big show of glorifying war and military culture, but does very little for the soldiers that return from these wars. It really is a national disgrace.

The USA spends so much on war and gives over US$3 BILLION dollars a year in Military aid to Israel yet people still live on the streets in what is supposed to be the "greatest country in the world".

I wrote this now, because people with no compassion annoy me. It's not great poetry, but it's true.

Stained

Just like you
Your parents were
(Obviously)
Of sufficient,
Even superior
means
No one
In your family
Ever made
An unwise move
You are of noble birth and
Much-posted worth
Today you bestride the Turd-World small pond like a colossus
Acknowledging your time of need
Or that others bleed
Is an inconvenient
Truth
Those needy times, or sordid climes
Were not really you
And so few know…just deny
As company backslappers laugh when you buy another round
And the classiest company at
The fashionable bar abound
The terrifying hound of truth
Stalks…
And reminds you of your
Humble roots
Cast such fear aside,
Credit cards will suffice.
Won’t they?

That's pretty deep - I imagined you reciting that with a bongo, a fez and a hookah in a darkened bar.

Food for thought.
