Lets put it this way - there are a LOT more families and high class expats in town then what us westerners realise and that is the fact NOW, TODAY. Target it and you have a chance. I personally think its going to take another couple of years, but establish yourself and get a reputation now and things are going to explode soon. You will notice I said EXPATS. They live here now and don't give a shit about road conditions between here and anywhere else. If they need to go elsewhere, they park their Hummers up and fly.
Right, first GM ( and I realise you weren't having a go at me mate, all good. Its a debate and you don't have a debate if you dont have opposing views). First, I quite clearly stated ,its going to take a couple of years. You want a date? Thats just ridiculous, but lets do it just for arguments sake. January 1st 2017.
Second. You all seem to keep missing the point that good business management is about finding a target market, identifying and then providing the product they want and then TARGETING THAT MARKET! Like it or lump it, the market I mentioned is here and is growing FAST. Keep your blinkers on and keep targeting the ever shrinking sexpat, druggie, cheap charlie market that Sihanoukville made its initial name/reputation on and the vast majority of you will be out of business by the date I mentioned - imo. If you actually put good, sound business practice, INTO practice, you may well do very well soon ( around January 1st 2017!) If you honestly can't see the sense in that from a business point of view, well, seriously, stick to whatever it is you do well which quite obviously ISN"T running a sevrice industry business.
Best of luck to you all in whatever it is you do. As long as you're happy, don't give a flying fuck about what anyone else thinks :thumb:

Thank you.

Ridiculous? I think a specific date that these things have to come to past by is more than fair.

Without a specific date you can always be saying "soon...soon...almost...just be patient....we're almost there..." You can keep on saying that forever. That's not a fair stance in a debate.

Without a specific date, everyone in history who has said "Sinville's just about to exit the transition period and really be a hot spot on the map" would still be right.

But now you have given a date. If by that date you and others are STILL saying "we're in a transition period, just a little bit longer" then you admit you're predictions were wrong.

Without a specific date, I could say "trust me, Sinville is getting a Disney Land in the not so distant future" and nobody could prove me wrong until the end of time.

If the others before you (think 15 years back or so) had told everyone that Sinville is in a transition period and it would be out of the transition period by January 1, 2017, people would have laughed and not have sunk their money into their businesses.

So, I don't think it's ridiculous in the least for someone who claims that this transition period will take a couple of years to give a specific date that we will all acknowledge this by.

I hope you're right. I wish everyone before you had been right too. If so, we'd already be there by now! But they have all been wrong, and by January 1, 2017 we will know if you're the first one to have predicted this right, or if you fall into the category of everyone before you that has been wrong when they came here and thought "NOW IS THE TIME, LET'S GET IN ON THE GROUND FLOOR, THIS PLACE IS ABOUT READY TO TAKE OFF!"

Did I mention that I love Sinville and that none of this should be regarded as an insult to the area or the people there? Yes, I think I did. :good:

LTO: You need to do your research a little better. In the words of the CEO of AirAsia when they tried to fly into Snooky "The fees are too high." (as in set by the government. I wonder what kind of dirty deal the powers that be are doing with the French company that's runs the airports? ) This was a year and a half ago. Cambodia Air already had a job fair in PP and the airplanes are setting in the Philippines, but the government hasn't signed the paperwork to fly in/out of Cambodia. Naga World can get away with jets full of Chinese gamblers as its charters and they are very well connected.(one Airbus now and three more on order. Naga World Air could become bigger than Angkor Air and on international flights will be bigger with its four airbus's.)

The Vietnamese built an international airport on nearby (to Snooky) Phu Quoc. They want to funnel tourists to their beach's not to Snooky. They want the tourist dollars in Vietnam not Cambodia. Research corporations in Cambodia and you come up time and time again with the government of Vietnam. Research "Vietnamese Military Telecom" as they have big stacks in Cambodian telecoms. Angkor Air's planes are leased from Ta Da! Vietnam Airlines.

I think by and large it HAS transitioned a lot already compared to years ago. Just consider how the people who haven't been here for 10 years refer to the place, and how far off the mark they are.

There's still a pretty steady eb of low season traffic now, to the point I'd just call it "lower" season. Businesses are still making money instead of having to use high season profits to "ride it out".

Get out.

There are 2 hotels which would have a pop at international 4 star status.

I'm happy about that. I liked the place best when the streets ran with the effluvium of heroin and stick brothels, but that's gone and it hasn't become Koh Samui fine dining and infinity pools in the meantime.

Anyway, I'll be down there in the morning. Wahey.
I would say Sokha Resort and Song Saa could probably easily hit 5 star, if not they'd be high 4s. Queenco and Moha Mohori would likely be 4 star. 3s would be a OC, Golden Sands, Independance, Serendipity Resort, Golden Beach, Mealea, Sok San, Victory Castle, Pagoda Rocks... there's more but that makes over 12 as I said that range from 3-4 with a couple that may easily be 5. ESPECIALLY Song Saa (at $1,300 a NIGHT and up).

when i worked for a tourist publication in Cambodia back in 2008 i covered the whole country as advertising/marketing manager

SHV we looked at and except for 4-5 places, decided it was worthless to spend any time there. Yes that was a while ago but what has really changed since then? not much, few more hotels /casinos and that's it

Until there are more rooms as i said, you wont see intentional flights in as there just is not enough demand for high quality tourist there.

no shopping, no tourist attractions (now that the airplane disco is gone)

the 4 hotels/resorts u mentioned? how many rooms? how many farangs vs Khmer are spending time there? how many months of the year?

Too much competition from Thailand , Bali and Vietnam for beach resorts
maybe 10 years

Sokha can compete. It's right up with the better beach resorts I've stayed at in SEA (Le Meridien Khao Lahk, Sheraton Krabi, Marriott Phuket, Sheraton Bali, Hyatt Bali etc) The beach, grounds, gym, spa, pool, villas and public areas are all top notch. I've never been in a regular room though. I belong to their gym so I'm there a lot. The mix at Sohka (in decreasing order) seems to be - Chinese, Russian, English speakers, Korean, Viet, & French.

It is completely about the airport.

You have to think that there is an underlying agenda to the way it has been kept on ice forever- seemingly contrary to the interests of some very connected investors.

Given the stuff going down in Thailand lately, you would think they would open the doors? I am missing something here about the cui bono. It is very doubtful that ineptitude would dictate the long running languishing of air traffic.

every time i come there, more and bigger hotels are being rushed up, who benefits by keeping the airport on ice?

maybe they want to get teh electricity straightened out and the sewage first?
LOL
