Bar Owners in Sihanoukville Being Watched

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Its obvious why you don't run a business.
I'm not sure that it's "obvious". Can you just spell it out? Serious question.

A good business owner/manger finds the market and caters to it.
You've brought up the fact that I don't run a business here, so.....

Can you tell us about your history here running businesses?

Are you running a business now? Owner or just manager?

All I'm saying is that it sounds like you've been here a while, yet somehow, very recently, discovered a whole new group of people that you didn't know existed, and now you have all sorts of predictions, etc.

I'm glad you're excited about it, and that's a very positive trait to have when being ambitious and trying to make money in a coastal town in a developing nation, but remember how many people have come here with those same thoughts in their heads and failed miserably.

In your opinion, when did this "transition period" begin and when will it end, roughly?

I hope you don't think I'm on your tits, and if you'd prefer to just write me off as an idiot and not even bother replying, we're still cool, and I definitely look forward to checking out your place you mentioned above next time I'm at the beach!

No matter which way it's heading, I happen to like the way things are going! I think all these different markets will co-exist for a long time to come.

The $20,000 beach hut restaurants/guesthouses will continue to get kicked out over time when bigger projects continue to grow and need more space.

Did YOU know how big and lucrative it was? If so, why did you keep it a secret?
LoL! Keeping secrets is my hobby.

I'm still not exactly sure what businesses you're talking about.

Fancy restaurants and resorts for rich Russians?

Yes, I admit I haven't given those much thought, if that's what you're talking about.

I'm really only arguing that you came on here saying that the cheap drugs, sex and booze will be gone shortly because of the rich Russian expats that currently live there. I don't think those things will be gone before I can learn to read and write Khmer.

That - "Just a manager" phrase shows me just how far away from having the knowledge/experience to run a business you are. Are you "just a teacher?" Or are you damn good at what you do and an asset to your school? I remember your post on the other forum that went something along the lines of "the quickest way to ruin you're business is to hire a manager" again, you obviously have no idea about running a business. No offence taken mate. A good debate is a good debate. I'm hitting the sack now, busy day tomorrow.

LoL, not tense. I'm just trying to fully understand the situation there.

If he's suggesting the biggest market is rich Russian expats, and that the money they generate will wipe out the shoe string tourism that's currently going on, I think he's wrong.

And of course, as he stated, I'm not a main target of any of these businesses. I'm an expat that stays in $15 rooms. Might as well throw me in the backpackers group. That's still a huge market for that area.

I'm just saying that I'm not convinced much has changed, or is changing that is noteworthy.

Yes, I've definitely noticed the upscale options popping up left right and center, but nothing that would suggest that cheap backpackers have anything to worry about in the foreseeable future. That scene will continue to exist.

Ok, take out the word "just." I meant no offense.

Personally, there is a huge difference between the 2, in every field I can think of. I'm guessing you're a manager then? I can see a manager trying to imply it's the same as being an owner, but I can't see an owner trying to imply it's the same as being a manager. Based on that, I'm assuming you're a manager.

You aren't the first person to assume I have no business experience because I'm teaching here.

Please quote me on that "ruining a business" comment. I think you will see what I said very valid and specific to the topic being discussed.

Oh, and for the record, I'm definitely "just a teacher" at the moment. That doesn't mean anything when discussing business though. If I happened to have a stamp collection, would I only be fit to discuss other stamp collections? Please continue to imply that teachers know nothing about anything other than teaching. Yawn...

Coolio, catch you down there soon!

I think Sihanoukville bar owners have been saying that Sihanoukville is about to really take off and be flooded in tourist money, for about fifteen years now.

SHV is a rotten drunk who has not yet hit bottom. And the wealthier will not go there for any length of time as the locals are just too nasty.

Based on 2 other beach resorts I've personally seen develop from what I would describe as early stage tourist resorts, Koh Samui & Pattaya, and my own impression of 6 months in SNH in the last year I would say it takes at least 10-15 years for full scale development. I've heard it so many times in Pattaya from business people targeting I guess what they regard as high spending customers that their market is the only future and the traditional market is dead. That has proved to be wrong. I think they fail to recognise that a successful tourist resort can cater to a wide range of customers and markets, they're not mutually exclusive. Re the OP I can't see all the shitty hole in the wall Victory Hill bars surviving, maybe as highlighted they perpetually change hands, but there is always going to be a number of successful venues catering for the backpacker/low to average spending tourists and residents. Long live sun, sand, sea, sex and booze, ( you can keep the drugs except for the cialis ).

Hotdigr, I'll definately come along to your place to eat the next time I'm over as it sounds good. I'm all for more choice and good value for money quality eateries.
Yes sir, I can boogie, I can boogie, boogie, boogie all night long.

Yes. I would qualify that...(sex, drugs and cheap beer...in their present form)
